Default Why do I need a Blackberry plan?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi guys,

I am just wondering why the cell phone companies make you sign up to a Blackberry plan to make use of a Blackberry?

I already have unlimited GPRS so why do I have to pay again to get the Blackberry service?

Also how do they track it? Do Blackberrys use a specific port?

Thanks for any advice.

Because Bob said so.

Just kidding. Actually, it's just as you said, the devices connect to special servers, on special ports. Essentially, that is an authentication step, so you have to have the BlackBerry data service enabled in order to utilize any features beyond telephony and SMS. Usually, BlackBerry data plans include unlimited GPRS transfer, so it is not anything in addition to your current WAP access, it is a replacement.

Also mobile networks have to pay RIM for each subscriber using the blackberry service, as far as I know, which means they need a way to track each subscriber through their acount to see who has a Blackberry device in their subscription.

^^^ What dc/dc said. Long story short... No BlackBerry data plan = no email.

I've maybe got something a bit confused here but I am looking to connect my HTC Charmer to our Enterprise BES server via the up coming Blackberry connect client on the HTC.

T-Mobile said I will have to continue paying my £7.50 (~$13.38) for unlimited internet access and have to pay £5 (~$8.92) for the ability to connect to a Blackberry BES.

Have I been advised right? And therefore I am paying £5 (~$8.92) for access to a couple of ports?

Thanks

5 quid is not that much for the functionality you enable. Both of the additional charges you pay are still less than what I pay on T-Mobile USA

True its not a lot but I would be paying it personally to recieve my work e-mail on my HTC. I already have a work 7290, just fancied having it all in one device. Its not really worth it as on my wage xxx163;60 per year could be used a lot better.

T-Mobile UK just launched that data plan at the begining of the month so hopefully other networks here and abroad might follow suit. There is quite a few T's and C's like no VOIP but its still pretty cheap considering, it made me switch suppliers.

Thanks for the advice guys!

Oh if you have a BB already, then I don't recommend adding another one.

Or if your like myself you setup your email server to forward non-spam to <phone_number>@t-mobile.uk.net (somewhere on this board is a list for near enough every network, but i cant find it at the mo) which gets delivered as a text to my phone and replying to the text sends it back to an email to the original sender. Instant email without any additional fee.

As for wap and possibly mms (im using a 7100t, it dont have mms anyway) then you'l be required to pay the extra until someone works out how to write a program which connects via conventional ports. But something like this would require application signing, and i cant see rim signing something that will lose them money. As for hacking the signing structure on your device that would leave it open to attack by all sorts of malicious code.

Finally how come you can get instant email for xxx163;5 t-mob want to charge me xxx163;10, and then only include 3mb of wap an 55mb of email. I need to speak to who you was talking to. lol.

She said it was £10 at first but then she said it would be £5 as I am already on a web and walk tariff with the unlimited data plan.

Do you have unlimited SMS?

The difference in the pricing is because you have a BlackBerry brand device, and LSmith has a 3rd party device with BB Connect software.

They already have, 2GB, no VOIP, no file sharing, you can't use this as a modem for a PC or laptop and no audio or video streaming...

Not quite unlimited, Iv upto 900 per month, I say upto as for every minute of calls I make I have 2 less texts available. Thats the easiest way to look at how t-mob now work here.

I would say if you don't use it much they won't notice, apparently skype uses port 80 so its unlikely to flag up to them unless you use it a lot.

Sounds like he is on the new Flex plans, you pay a monthly fee for a monthly allowance.

Eg £20 per month for £34 worth of mins/texts
£35 per month for £180 worth of mins/texts

All the deals are at T-Mobile UK
