Is it possible to host the BB server and SQL database on the same hardware?
We have BES 4.0 and are using MSDE

Should be fine. Bit confused by your first post as you mention MSDE and SQL Server.
Assuming it is MSDE, no problem

Yes. It does depend on the specs for the server and the number of users.

Isn't it recommended to have BES on a separate standalone machine? I've noticed that after we separated the two servers (virtualized BES), we got much better performance.

It depends on the size and shape of the environment.
There's no "one solution fits all" for BES implementations.
