Not entirely so. The post above yours, by "kappasolo", provides a perfect alternative. I clicked on the thumbnail picture, enlarging it, and was able to add a new contact from the published image just by pointing my 8900 at the image! It came up as "Tommy", along with a PIN number... No other details filled in, but it appears that the process works fine right off a computer monitor image of your "bar code"...
...and of course this means that you can post it on your website, on your Facebook homepage, at your BlackberryForums avatar, and send it to somebody in an email.... I imagine you could wind up with a zillion anonymous BBM "buddies" in record time this way...

Yep, tried it and was asked if I wanted to add it to my contact list. View the Bar Code in your camera and it will instantly launch into the mode to store the contact...pretty cool, unless you have a model without a camera.

I know these are QR codes or something similar, but how to I get my 8900 to do anything with them. When I take a picture, I just get a picture.

You need the new BB Messenger installed. Then, when you're in BBM and select "add contact", you'll have an option to "scan invitation from another Blackberry"... If you select that, it uses the camera and lets you snap a pic of the "barcode", and that has all the user info encoded in the image...

i installed the bbm 5.0 and i loved the features on it, including the barcode, however less than 50% of my messages were going though so i had to go back to the 4.7 . verry dissapointing.

I noticed some big delays and I think dropped messages as well. If I send myself the time as a message, some took 10 minutes to show. I think some test messages didn't make it at all.
Why would the data take longer? Is it going through a different system or something like that? Hopefully it just due to limited bandwidth while this is being tested.

Very cool feature, just scan the pic and new contact added...
Must add that there is the option to save your barcode as .png in your media card, that way you don't need any other software to take snapshots to publish it in any page.
Luv this BBM 5

I couldn't open the .png files in a browser, either. Right click it, save it to someplace on your computer and work it from there. If you have Vista, it will open in Windows Photo Gallery. Otherwise, you can open it with Paint and add it from there.

I have BBM 5.0 and I saved a png of my barcode to my memory card, but when I copy it to my computer and try to open the png my computer says that the png is a corrupt file. Anyone else having any problems like this?

I was able to open mine using the Opera web browser (on Mac). Read somewhere that MS Paint should open it.

I saved my png to memory card as regular saved pic. Then I e-mailed it to my computer. Using WinXP Pro the pic appeard in e-mail then I just saved it, copy/paste, upload.... It was the best way I could figure out to do it.
