I don't have a data plan and when i connect with my 8820 over the wifi and click on Google, it starts loading google but then hangs midway before starting to load map. Have anyone tried using Google maps with only WIFI?

I tried doing that but could'nt get it to work. Same for Gtalk, gizmo, MSN etc...

Has anyone figured out how to get it to work ? Esp for MSN / Yahoo it says I dont have the necessary service books on my BB gives me a link to visit a site but dunno how to get it from there. I dont have a data plan either..

Any Ideas if what we are trying to do is supported ?

Many of the data applications (like the gmail apps) do require a Data Plan.

I just talked with a TMObile rep from the PDA dept. He added what is called as the blackberry feature enabler. This fixed the issue. Now I can use google talk etc using wi-fi without any data plan. Thanks to LunkHead's post.

i was able to get google maps to work with the edge gsm data connection off with just the wifi enabled. but there is really no point to this.

without the UMA connection ?

The main point behind this discussion is that if you can make it work on wi-fi then you are independent of the carrier. Currently the way its setup, you have to go through the carriers network to establish the initial connection and then u transfer data through the internet.

Google maps is just one application as a test case

I am not sure what the UMA stands for but i was able to start google maps with just the Wifi connection turned on and the edge data radio turned off.

But it could be that i established an intitial connection to google map with my data connection first. But anything after that i always tried it with the edge radio off and just the wifi.

A data plan is a carrier provided paying option that gives you access to data, for example to surf the web or to run google maps.

It is the plan required for your Blackberry to communicate with the RIM Blackberry servers to make all the blackberry features functional. Without it you don't get any blackberry features like email, pin, maps, etc.

data plan is basically the service for your internet that allows you to run certain apps that needs internet service
