Default Using Skype on Blackberry Curve 8320 through WiFi

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

Need advice on using Skype (all features) on a Blackberry 8320.

a) What version of skype to download for Blackberry and from where (url please)? As of now Skype is not supporting software for Blackberry but is supporting Nokia, Samsung, Sony E and Motorola. - See Skype Mobile URL for more info.

b) How to configure Skype to use the WiFi on the Blackberry ?

c) What are the alternatives to Skype that one can use on the Blackberry to make cheap VOIP calls?

Assumptions

a) Blackberry is not tied to any service provider.
b) UMA is available on the users network.
c) User is located in India
d) Blackberry services are enabled on the phone.

Thank you

Skype is not available for the Blackberry. There is no VoIP for the 8300.

Could someone please elaborate on this? I had thought that gizmo5's status was still uncertain; I hadn't realized that it was a hard fast "no" (EDIT: unless you're just referring to the fact that no available services are actually considered production-worthy). Is the total lack of VoIP enforced by RIM and/or T-Mobile, or just due to a lack of capable applications/services to date? I'm still looking for my first BB, but I was hoping eventually to try to play with VoIP on an 8320 from T-Mobile myself too.

Thanks...

Awesome; it will be interesting to see what happens over the coming months and years, then. Thanks!

Default Using BB overseas

I don't mean to de-rail this thread but i've got a question relating to this subject.

I have users who travel to Europe, South America and Asia. They run up a very high phone bill while traveling.

I was also looking into Skype but now find out that it's not supported.

Is there anything available for the Curve while traveling overseas?

Thanks

If they have the T-Mobile plan, they may be able to reduce costs when they make calls over IP via UMA. You must have a suitable WiFi connection, with UMA, for that to occur.

Default No WiFi

That's the problem. There's no WIFI in some of the areas. So i'm looking for an alternative to reduce the phone bill.

My suggestion - and what I do - is to carry a cheap unlocked phone. I get a local inexpensive SIM card when I travel and use that for calls. And I try not to use the BB for calls. Replacing the SIM in the BB is not an option as I need my e-mail to continue.

I carry a roaming SIM from globalsimcard.co.uk which has "free" incoming calls in 80 countries. The phone has a UK (Isle of Mann) mobile number. Freedigits.com has a route to these numbers for $US0.13 a minute. I signed up for a free account with pbxes.com, obtained a free US (Iowa) number from freedigits.com and have it programmed to call forward to my UK number. I just call forward my US mobile to it in the airport as I am about to board the plane. If I get a local SIM card, I reprogram the number on the other end to ring to it. I generally need to be in a country more than a week to do this.
