EDIT : dead link corrected
EDIT2 : updated BLACKBERRY.ALX file to unlock all themes
EDIT 3: Added instructions for installation

To install this update:
1. Download and install the latest version of Desktop Manager
2. Donwload this OS and install it to the PC.
3. Delete the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader (this step is necessary any time an OS is installed from a different carrier than what is branded on the BB.)
4. Plug in BB and open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

To add the vendor themes with the Blackberry.alx included in the BlackBerry.zip below. This can be done before or after the upgrade. Recommendations are to do it after the installation of the OS.

1. Download and unzip the file below.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\shared\loader files\8700-v4.2.1.85_P2.3.0.67
2. Find the Blackberry.alx and rename it Blackberry.old (you can delete the old one but this allows you to restore it easily if necessary)
3. Copy the new Blackberry.alx you unzipped into this same folder where the old Blackberry.alx was.
4. Now connect the BB and run Desktop Manager and open Application Loader. You should see that "core applications" says "upgrade." Finish the installation.

Note: You do not use the "add" feature in Application Loader for this process.
For T-Mobile BB users....
By the way, T-Mobile may release BIS 2.3 (would be applied to OS 4.2)? Here is a link:

The only thing that seems to be problematic for me, is the indicator light doesn't work on the new OS, Green or Red

I've just installed this onto my 8700 (I'm with t-mo). I haven't noticed too much that's different other than the "Change Language" option when composing an email. I have however noticed that the browser and BBMessenger is noticably faster. I've also used the updated blackberry.alx file and it seems to have uploaded all the themes without any problems.

I'm not sure if this is theme dependant but I've activated the AT&T theme and when I'm viewing a message it gives me an option to "instant message". Does anyone else have this?

Interesting piece of info.
What type of messages are you viewing- Yahoo email account or POP3
or other?
Can't remember seeing that option on my 8700g when I had this OS.
But then, I wasn't actually observing too closely.

It was a pop3 mail from my tmo.blackberry.net account. I'll forward those messages to my gmail account which is how I noticed the new menu option.

Hey guys and gals,

First time poster - spent about 2 hours yesterday lurking.

I just successfully upgraded my 8700r (R= Rogers, methinks) to the latest 4.2 OS [Pkg:4.2.1.155, App:4.2.1.96, Plt:2.3.0.79 (ATT)] with no problems so far.

I just followed the directions carefully - ensuring that I deleted the vendor.xml file and presto-bango my Rogers Smart Phone can now use the Media Manager in the 4.2 DM - something that RIM itself says is not possible.

Just wanted to thank all the regulars here - google.com is your friend and it led me here.

Cheers from beautiful B.C.

Let me dig it up - they sort of contradict themselves in two of their technical help topics.

One topic says that Media Manager requires 4.2 DM and 4.2 OS - while another states that Media Manager requires the two 4.2's and must be either 8100,8300 or 8800 series BB.

It could very well be that the second article was written before the 4.2.xx code was produced for the 8700 series BB.

I'm just happy it works - saves me from having the DL some shareware picture uploader that may or may not work.

I get this too on occasion with 4.2.1.96 and Blackberry Messenger. I usually have to end the conversation, close the app and reopen and it's fine again.

An 8700 is an 8700 regardless of the letter that follows. It's the 8703, 8705, and 8707 that are actually different models.

That's precisely it. 4.2 for the 8700 is still relatively new whereas the other three models mentioned above have always been 4.2 devices.

My 8700C with ATT is using this version 4.2.1.126.

I found that my ringtone and volume is low. Also seems bblights is not working. Anyone can help?

Thanks!

All you have to do is delete the vendor.xma after your don installing the newer os. I'm using vodaphones OS on my tmo 8800
I have att's os on my 8700g
