Quote:
ORLANDO, Fla.- Wireless Enterprise Symposium 2008- Booth #841-Sybase iAnywhere today announced it will preview SQL Anywhere® for the BlackBerry® platform from Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq:RIMM) (TSX:RIM) at the Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) 2008 in booth #841, and deliver the product as part of the upcoming SQL Anywhere 11 release. With the release, SQL Anywhere’s proven mobile database and synchronization platform is extended to the BlackBerry platform, providing application developers the ability to develop data rich applications for the frontlines of their business.

SQL Anywhere, with over 10 million deployed licenses and powering thousands of embedded and mobile database applications, now offers the increasing number of BlackBerry developers a full SQL relational database and data synchronization client. Developers now will be able to build powerful mobile-centric line-of-business applications such as field service, CRM, asset management, and survey applications on the BlackBerry platform, and integrate them with enterprise systems. Highly mobile industries — from healthcare to transportation/logistics — will benefit from the ability to approve work orders, check inventory and manage customer data in the field and on the go.

“SQL Anywhere for BlackBerry sets new standards for data reliability and performance of mobile line of business applications,” says Chris Kleisath, Senior Director, Engineering, Sybase iAnywhere. “Developers and enterprises alike can unwire their enterprise by building on their existing investment in the BlackBerry platform, enabling mission critical data to flow seamlessly and reliably from the data center to their frontline decision makers.”

“Applications being deployed on mobile devices are becoming increasingly complex as the capabilities and resources of the devices increase, often approaching PC functionality,” says Jack Gold, President of J.Gold Associates, LLC. “However, the complexity of these applications often exceeds the data capabilities included in the native device OS. A robust, secure and easily synchronized data base, such as Sybase SQL Anywhere, is required to enable the same level of data integrity and manipulation as available on PCs and servers.”

"We are seeing a significant uptake of customers interested in data-rich BlackBerry applications," says Armeen Mazda, President & CEO, Appeon Corporation. "We are a longtime SQL Anywhere partner in the mobile application development space and we are thrilled that Sybase iAnywhere is committed to helping us move into this emerging market."

“A particularly powerful benefit of the robust and security-focused BlackBerry platform is that it enables developers to build software applications that also leverage technologies and applications offered by other vendors in the mobile ecosystem,” said Jeff McDowell, Vice President, Global Alliances at Research In Motion. “We’re pleased by Sybase iAnywhere’s commitment to the BlackBerry development community and look forward to the coming launch of SQL Anywhere 11.”

The SQL Anywhere database and data synchronization client provide several new key features to BlackBerry developers:

SQL Anywhere UltraLite® relational database including transactional integrity, indexes, and SQL data access;
Rich, bi-directional heterogeneous data synchronization capabilities including direct support for Sybase®, Oracle, Microsoft, IBM, and MySQL back-end databases;
A pure Java ME implementation with an extremely small footprint well-suited for the BlackBerry environment.
SQL Anywhere 11, including support for BlackBerry OS 4.1 and later, will be available in the second half of 2008. For more product information and upcoming webcasts visit SQL Anywhere for Blackberry - SQL Anywhere - Database Management - Products - Sybase Inc.

WOW! Now we'll finally see doctors reviewing, ordering, cancelling medications for patience, patients medical history (online from Hospital database), dental records & history, acute reactions to medications being logged & uploaded. All MUCH more powerful than those renowned Palm OS doctoral applications from years ago that got so much press.

Wonder if BES admins will be able to use this for SQL errors blocking BES functions.

will be keepig an eye on this.
