I have successfully tethered my Bold to my laptop using a USB cable and the instructions in the faq. However, my speeds are very slow, in the 300/200 kbs range, nowhere close to the 3g speeds people have reported. I then saw these instructions: http://www.mattsilverman.com/2007/11/blackberry-8800-as-usb-dial-up-modem-in.html.They are slightly different, but when I created a new dial-up connection and tried it, it worked and my download speed increased to about 600kbs. This is also much slower than others have reported, but better than I was getting.


Does anyone know how to create a connection to tether a Bold with AT&T that will use 3g? Would the AT&T Connection Manager help, or is that just for those who buy a tethering plan? I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Just a FYI, on Rogers Wireless... while in my basement (bad reception) via BlueTooth, I was able to get speeds of 950kbps down and 350kbps up. Your speeds seem a bit low.

Yep. It will force you to the $60 tethering package if you dont already have it.

I tried Connection Manager, but it gave me an Error 734 message. It also deleted the Modem Initialization String I inserted when I created a Dial Up Connection to tether. So I gave up on it. I do not believe it is necessary. Any other ideas?

I tried the intitialization string in the Modem Settings. However, whenever I run Communication Manager, it deletes the string and puts it back to being blank.

I just tried the steps outlined in the first link and I'm getting an error 628. Any thoughts on this. I haven't researched much, but thought I'd see if anyone had a similar experience.

Nevermind, I changed the number dialed to *99#, then changed the advanced tab on modem in device manager to: AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","WAP.CINGULAR" and kept everything else the same as the first link instructions, changed the modem connection speed to 460800 and got download speeds of 1300kbs, upload 250kbs. I used some information out of this thread in this forum and some from another forum but finally got my Blackberry Bold to work as a modem using AT&T as my service provider on Windows Vista platform.

I'm a first time forum writer but I wouldn't have been able to get mine to work w/o insight from people on these forums so I am detailing how I got mine to work. Hope it helps!

1.If you have not already, download and install the Blackberry Desktop Software.
2.Go to the Windows Device manager. Quickest way: Start > Run > devmgmt.msc
3.Click + button next to Modems, double click “Standard Modem”
4.Click the Advanced tab
5.Enter this into the empty box (no leading space):
AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”wap.cingular”
6.Hit Okay, and close device manager.

Also, then
1 From your computer, click Start, Control Panel, then Network and Sharing Center.
2 Set up a connection or a net work then Next.
3 Select Set up dial up connection.
4 Select the Standard Modem, then Next.
5 Enter this as the phone number: *99# –> Next
6 Enter user name (ALL CAPS): ISP@CINGULARGPRS (after GPRS, put .COM) forum wouldn't let me post a website address
7 Enter and confirm password (ALL CAPS): CINGULAR1 –> Next/Finish
8 Open the desktop manager and plug in your Blackberry via the USB cable. Make sure it detects the Blackberry as connected.
9 Go back to your network connections window (step 7), and double click the new ATT Dialup icon.
10 Your password, username, and dialup number should already be saved. If it’s not, just follow lines 6 and 7 above again. Then just click “Dial”

This worked for me.. hope it works for you!

Sometimes this is caused by a provisioning issue. Make sure the media.net pay per use is provisioned. You need to have access to the ISP.CINGULAR APN to be able to use the BB as a modem IMO. I may be wrong though.

I was wondering the same thing, and I found out a few days ago that tethering on the Bold on 3G (with AT&T anyway) isn't possible right now. The AT&T guy said that the phone itself will surf on 3G but tethering is only on EDGE. He said that it's because BB hasn't put out the right driver. Oh well.

I'm using XP Pro, not Vista, so this may account for the difference, but when i do this, my standard modem is only available on COM1, not USB. How do I create a modem which will use USB, instead of a serial (COM) port?

EDIT: I discovered that I have a second "standard modem" which is on COM6. I don't know why, but it works. I'm successfully tethering on ATT using my new Bold, using "extra initialization command" AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","WAP.CINGULAR", dialing number *99#, username ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM and password CINGULAR1

I don't know what happened now my computer does not recognize my Bold as a new modem. How can i fix it?

So I was thinking of this same thing and the last I talked with AT&T, they did say I would have to purchase a tethering plan which I thought was garbage. I mean, I should be able to successfully do this without paying anything more. With that said, what is the best tutorial for us newbie's on how to do this without using their plan? Thanks much!

the best and easiest is pay a one time fee and use TETHERBERRY!
