Default Using personal Blackberry to access work email - work-arounds?

Please Login to Remove!

I've been debating getting a Blackberry, thinking that I could use it for my work and personal email. My company does not have BES (it has Exchange) and only issues Treos to management. I read this site's FAQ on the ways to receive email and assumed that I would be able to set up a rule in Outlook, redirecting all of my emails to the Blackberry address. However, I found out today from my company's tech support that we are not permitted to use personal Blackberries/Treos/etc with our work email, only corporate-issued ones. I tried redirecting and forwarding my work email to one of my personal addresses, but it didn't work. Are there any work-arounds to this situation?

Thanks!

You can use the blackberry internet service (BIS) to pull your email from your corporate servers. If you currently can access your corporate email via webmail, you can set up an account on BIS to pull your email similarly...provided your company does not block that too.

I was in a similar situation for 3 years, starting out with the outlook push (that was shut down by corporate), then the BIS, which they alternately block and allow.

The BIS option is not real time, usually a 15 min delay, but better than nothin'

You did try desktop redirector? It's not the best option, but should work in your situation.

The OP might be in similar position as I am. My company has locked down fowarding of emails to external addresses. My question is that the bigger issue seems to be a request to get around a company policy. Most companies have policies in place line this for information protection. I know it sticks sometimes, but trying to subvert the policy in some companies can get you fired.

I've tried forwarding and redirecting to a gmail address, and it doesn't work, either.

Thanks for the tip on webmail. I'll see if we have that, but it seems like they've thought of blocking everything.

I know the company wants to protect its information. I'm not super-informed on these kinds of security issues, but I don't really see how my work laptop is more secure than a Blackberry would be if I can forward emails individually, just not en masse.

If you have a BB you likely know that answer without asking.

If you don't, look at your email reconciliation options and you'll discover it, if you have one setup. It is possible to not have a BB e-mail address.

Can you set it up as a POP3 account? If so, BIS is the way to go.

I'm in a similar situation where I don't want to sign up for my company's BES service, yet want to be able to access my work email from my BB. I'm using the redirector that's part of the RIM Desktop Manager software. It works very well. I typically receive my corporate messages on my BB as quickly as they arrive in my Outlook box and I can reply very conveniently using my work return email address. The only down side is attachments cannot be forwarded with the email message using the redirector. It is necessary to have a BES server access for this feature.

They don't always make sense (and I'm an IT analyst). I think sometimes management just needs to look like it's attempting something. Really, if someone wanted to swipe data it wouldn't be a big deal to move it to a PST but I guess it's trickier to lock that down.

If they're locking down forwarding I seriously doubt that POP3 access is an option... Still, it's an option and worth looking at.

Thank you all so much for your advice!

Two questions about the desktop redirector:

I've read that the PC has to always be on for redirector to work. Is this literally true, or can I have the redirector running while I'm at work and receive emails on the blackberry, turn the PC off at the end of the workday, and update the blackberry the next morning when I turn it on again?

As I understand it, the redirector works at the level of my PC, not at the Exchange server level. Will my IT department be able to tell that I'm using the redirector?

I guess I'll likely just end up individually forwarding my work emails to the Blackberry email address. I can still do that regardless of the company's policy on personal blackberries, right?

Yes, that would work. But wouldn't that defeat the purpose? If you're at work, don't you have access to your e-mails anyway?

Depends if they are looking for it. If you've been persistently asking and all of a sudden, you're OK with the policy, I'd be suspicious.

You are still jeopardizing your job by circumventing company policies.
