Hey everyone,

I was just wondering what yall's thoughts were on a BlackBerry smartphone with web cam & video conferencing capabilities...I'm working on a marketing project and this was an idea that kinda came up.

The phone would have a camera on the face of the phone (one of the top 2 corners) so you could see the screen and video at the same time...there would more than likely also be a camera on the back to use for all your other camera needs.

Again, I'm just throwing this out there...RIM and BlackBerry don't actually have plans to do this (that I'm aware of). I just thought it would be kinda cool since there are already applications for BlackBerry to watch live webcams.

I would really appreciate your thoughts on this...whether or not it seems like a good idea or if you would use it or anything else you want to add!!

How about Dual cameras...one for photo taking (back) and one for video conferencing (front).. I personally love the idea. This type of technology really needs to get off the ground. I would personally love it because I'm in a long distance relationship, video chat can definantly service my finace and I's lonliness. If you know what I'm saying...wink. It is also a awesome idea for deaf and hard of hearing people looking for a mobile videophone solution to speak in their native toungue..err...hand.

You would need a hell of a lot of bandwidth. BBs with EDGE are definitely out and I doubt even EVDO could handle it.

this runs on ATTs 3g network (called video share or some such thing), just not on the BB. Look at the Sync or other UMTS phones and how they are setup. Now look at them and compare their battery life to that of the BB. You will find that the devices using 3g dont last very long with continous streaming voice and data. welcome to the forums.

If it is so complicated for the BB to handle, how is it that there are already people jailbreaking their Iphones to do this?

BB has a 10 year jump on this technology. Iphone should be trying to catch up not leading the way.

RIM does not have a 10-year R&D jump on Apple. If anything, it's the exact opposite of that statement. Certainly, RIM would have a jump on Apple with regards to mobility and cellular networks, however that is not the case with design, asthetics, function, user interfaces, input devices, cameras, keyboards (or lack thereof), etc.

I can only imagine the iPhone battery life with web cam/video conferencing. It lasts 4-5 hours now on 3G without those applications..

Personally I don't see much of a market for this.

As long as I know in Japan there's a couple of handsets capable of videoconference,in America we think we have the best and the latest,but that's not true,even the bold was release first in other country that is not even a first world country,and well everybody knows that Japan develops always all the latest good stuff

With the deval of the us dollar, we are fast becoming the 3rd world county of old technology. I just sent 2 people to Japan and had to rent 8707g's so they can get their data...

Places like Japan and Korea have been far ahead of us in cell technology for a long time, they have to invest a lot less in the infrastructure to get stuff up and running where as the us is huge and costs so much more to upgrade networks.

I do an internet radio/video show & would use it out in the field as a reporter.

Just as a side note, though, at this time, you can semi-accomplish that using QIK.com, and yes, even using T-Mobile (tho it is slower then malassas!) . The other down side tho is the fact that you cannot see the screen. Agreed, having a cam on the front would be perfect.

Likewise, just having the ability to use a Blackberry as a webcam while connected to the laptop would be great!

Why so complicated. I have an 8900 with a camera and it is almost always connected via Wi-Fi to either remote sites, home or work. It would be nice to have the ability to stream the video out to the local Wi-Fi network and have it viewable by other users on the network. We are a construction firm and often the time it takes to take digital pictures, upload them to a local machine and e-mail them is measured in hours. For a repair issue, it would be nice to be able to simply walk the site and stream the video back to the estimator or engineer.

Take a video and e-mail it or send it to a contact on BlackBerry Messenger. Problem solved.
