I was with a VZW executive today at a golf outing. Verizon is releasing an 8700 type Blackberry. Time frames is still the same late summer/early-mid fall.

Good question!

He had a 7130e using BES 4.1 to Lotus Notes corporate. And if your wonder what his opinion was on the Treo and Moto Q ?? Not very favorable! He feels RIM support far exceeds Microsoft/Palm and Motorola.

Was his 7130e jumping from 1XEV to 1X?

Did he give and insight into the problem and if a software fix was possible?

Don't know that. But since I've upgraded to the newer OS 4.1.268 that problem is much less seen. My experience is it depends on location. At home I never see this. But in my office, I sometimes do.

I get a lot of failed sent messages that I have to resend with the 7130e. If Verizon keeps going the way they are Cingular is going to smoke them when UMTS is fully deployed.

The only reason I use VW is because of EVDO and the ability to tether. The way things are going I am seriously considering switching back to Cingular.

My wife has a 7250 it is amazing because she gets a rock solid EVDO signal while I get 1X. The devices sit next to each other on the table.

A little birdy from Altell told me a CDMA chipset from Qualcomm is due in an 8700 in a few months. Same little birdy also mentioned the next generation blackberry's are already starting to float around the engineering centers, and rumors of a tumb stick or something where our current convince button is on the front panel.

Talked to someone at Verizon store today. A no BS type of guy. He said that he think that Verizon is going to skip the 8700 and go to the next generation BB. He doubts that the 8700 will make it to Verizon. He said that there pushing the Q and the Treo 700W and P.

Bummer....

It's almost June now...anyone hearing anything new about when we'll get the 8700 for Verizon? Is it just me, or is it really wrong that because I'm with Verizon I have to watch all my Cingular and T-Mobile friends have the latest BlackBerry while I sit around with my year old 7250???

If having the latest is that important to you, you can always switch. In the mean time to paraphrase Ernest and Julio Gallo, "We wont sell any Verizon 8700 before its time." It will get here when it gets here, and traditionaly Verizon takes its time in releasing both hardware and software. Right now I would probably bet that it wont be available until such time as the "Q" initial interest has died down.

You could upgrade to the 7130e while waiting if you want a new BB that bad.

My major 7130e complaint is durability and 'feel'... it's fragile by many accounts compared to the classic BB. Suretype doesn't bother me anymore and I tend to like it now but it took a number of months. -Pk

The Q is out now.

As thin as it looks I can't think it will take the toddler-in-China-shop handling that I dish out to my 7100.

...but I guess that is what insurance is for...

And when it does come out, lets hope it supports the Today theme and possibly a multimedia player (Intel processor).
