Very true. I think everyone's gotten side-tracked by the work "Hack". The original poster was talking about bypassing the BlackBerry OS to run Linux or some other kernel and/or run code directly at the hardware level. The first post doesn't suggest any interest or intention to break RIM's encryption or gain access to anyone's information.

... not that it would be any easier to do so ...

But the good thing about it getting hacked is that RIM will get off their high horse and realize that it is not perfect and maybe we can get some os updates faster...sorry had to throw that in

but again, this whole discussion is hypothetical...if and when it happens, we can all discuss again
Maybe not so passionate but when someone makes statements that under estimates the work that would be required to break into the RIM OS, we all take exception. The insinuate that all it would take is a little prize to the winner to get this feat accomplished! LOL!

Maybe RIM does not get hacked by putting out it's software too quickly and creating problems.

My computer had to dowmload 12 MS updates today before it could shut down!

Maybe you could use your programming skills to comeup with a dating website for BB users? You could make more money with that...

I'm new here, and I'm not sure if this is a touchy subject but I'd like to do some blackberry hacking. I have taken a few software engineering courses and I am in my second year of computer engineering at UoW.

Anyway, My goal is to get software to run natively outside of the BB OS, has any work been done in this area?

Furthermore, is there anyway to get access to the hardware while in the BBOS? It seems that development is limited without the key, however, I only bought a BB to play with so I'm looking for a way around that.

Another thing I wondered, How does a service provider program the phone initially? I haven't been able to find any information on a PST tool or service mode for any of the blackberry models which I find highly unusual considering I can even get into service mode on my Treo.

Also, I would like to run linux or something on it since like I said, I'm not really interested in using it as a phone.

Thanks for any information you can provide, and for the record I have a 8820 and a 8830 thanks,

Michael

I'd rather you hack Handigo i could use a large cash prize to pay for all the software i want to play around with...

"impossible" isnt "impossible" its just not bloody plausible...

i mean you could get it done i would wager it would cost you more in resources to hack the device then it would to create a similar device of the same quality with the same protection... .lol
