No its due to the fact that you do not have a data plan. You cannot upgrade your OS without a data plan.

Fratts, I'm not sure I follow your reasoning on this one. I have upgraded numerous devices that either didn't have a SIM card in them or was never connected to a carrier. Upgrading of the os has nothing whatsoever to do with a data plan. Its best to say that you don't know than to speculate and give out wrong information.

Misho, I would double-check that you downloaded the correct os for your device and then make sure you are following the posted instructions on how to upgrade. You could also try a complete wipe using jl_cmder and then use the loader.exe program to reinstall the os.

Oh and fratts is correct about windows 7 not being the culprit (well at least not in my experience).

@kirrinjones: Fratts is correct. It ABSOLUTELY IS because he doesn't have a data plan. This is a new policy by RIM that in order to update to 5.0 you MUST have a data plan on the device. Put a sim card in the device with a data plan and do the update to 5.0. Then the incremental updates do not require the data plan.

Well unless this new policy was implemented 30 minutes ago, because I just upgraded my colleagues spanking new, never touched a network, haven't got a sim card yet, 9000 to the new 5.0.0.554 os and it went through nicely and he's using it now.

But I will surely test this theory.

Did it already have a version of OS 5.0 on it? If it already had a version of 5.0 then a data plan is not required in order to do the incremental updates.

Oh, and by the way, it's NOT a theory. You might want to check your facts before posting.

I think its you that should brush up on your facts before bashing my CORRECT answer. I know for a fact that you cannot make the jump from 4.x to 5.0 without a data plan. Not sure what you think you did with your other attempts but I can tell you with 100% certainty you did not have 4.x installed before upgrading to 5.0. Or if you did make that jump you MUST have had a data plan. There is no other way the upgrade is possible or you would have been in the same position as the OP.

@John Clark - Thank you for backing me on this one, its nice to see that there is someone contributing to this thread that has an idea as to what they are talking about.

All that being said, there is a workaround. Copy all the contents of the 5.0 OS folder to one of your latest 4.x folder. Then do the upgrade.

Ohh that is interesting, I will have to give that a shot one of these days. I was never aware there was a workaround. I always thought you were SOL without a dataplan. Good to know!

Ok, I see the document, but this seems to apply if you use the desktop manager to do the upgrade.

Well I have seen the document and I accept that rim says so, but I'm just letting you all know that I just did an upgrade.

After you've done the upgrade you can replace the 4.x folder with its original contents (if you saved them) and the device will then recognize the 5.0 folder.

It also applies to loader.exe. I'm guessing the 9000 you upgraded had 5.0 already on it.
