Default Newbie needs help!!

OK - I know I am new but i have spent the last two evenings trying to search this great forum for answers but am still not any closer to getting my 8800 working.

My brother sent me his old 8800 series BB that had been connected to Telstra in Australia. It is unlocked (options / advanced /MEPD) as I can see the ID and it says that security is disabled. The problem is that I put a UK Vodafone SIM in and I am unable to get any service whatsoever so no calls or texting is possible. I have tried another SIM from another network but still nothing. I have wiped the phone and taken the battery out.

I have tried options/mobile network/manual and set it to scan but it just times itself out as it is unable to find any network even though I normally have excellent reception in the area.

I can only think that it has been barred by his old company so before I recycle it can anyone offer me any other alternative solutions

Many thanks in advance!!

I believe, though cannot confirm that Telstra use different GSM signals than the UK.
Therefore, it won't work in the UK.

have looked at the Telstra site and they expect phones to automatically find a local carrier so I would of thought that that cannot be the case (but am open to other opinions)

The 8800 was a quad band GSM device so it should work.
In the MEPD screen, what does it show for the Network option.
Forget the top line that shows SIM Card: Security Disabled.
The Network option must show disabled and not active

In the MEPD screen it shows from top to bottom,
SIM card : security disabled
a 19 digit ID code beginning 8944,
Personalisation:
SIM Disabled
Network Disabled
Network subset Disabled
service provider Disabled
Corporate Disabled
Phone number unknown number

My brother tells me that his company cancelled his telstra BB contract and he used it subsequently in Australia with another provider OK.

Unhelpful statement - it should work. Do you have another SIM to test with?

Hi NJB

I tried another UK Sim card as one of my first fixes and still couldn't connect to any network with it
