During the OS upgrade process the Desktop Manager software asks if you would like to backup your current data. I was under the impression that this was just a backup of user data but it may save the OS components for rollback purposes as well ...

Here's something that may work ... (don't have an 8703e in hand so I can't test it but, in theory, it may work ...)

1) Download the latest 8700 OS

2) Edit the Blackberry.alx as follows:

a) so that it thinks the OS you've downloaded is, in fact, for the 8703e

b) all of the OS modules are older than the currently loaded OS (you don't want to overwrite CDMA device code with GSM device code!)

c) make the ZEN theme modules the one exception to step b) so that they are the only files that are loaded.

Will this work? I don't know ... By messing around with the .alx files I was able to get the Zen files to copy over to my 7250 as part of the OS (note: Zen did not work on my 7250). But, I had the proper 7250 OS code downloaded as a base and simply added the Zen files to that.

The danger of playing around like this is that you may hit a point from which it is impossible to recover without the proper 8703e OS downloaded.

Plus, there are no garuntees that the 8700 Zen theme will run on the 8703e so the entire process may lead to a dead-end.

Still ... it would be a fun excercise!

On second thought ... that's WAY to complicated ....

1) Download an 8700 OS and exctract the Zen theme: net_rim_theme_bb_dimension_zen_320x240.cod

2) Write your own .alx file to add it onto the handheld using the Device Manager. Something like this should work:

Code:
<loader version="2006.09.21.1111">
 <application id="Zen Theme">
  <name>Zen</name>
  <description>Zen Theme Installation by Mark Hutchison</description>
  <version>2006.09.21.1111</version>
  <vendor>Research in Motion</vendor>
  <copyright>Copyright (c)</copyright>
  <fileset Java="1.0">
   <files>
    net_rim_theme_bb_dimension_zen_320x240.cod
   </files>
  </fileset>
 </application>
</loader>
Again ... there's no garuntee that the Zen theme from the 8700 will work on the 8703 but doing it in this way will not endanger your OS build in any way!

Give it a go, let me know if it works!

1 - download the Zen theme over-the-air, for now. that will be the easiest method. email the link below to your phone and click on it from there:

www.knology.net/~acidmax/blackberry/8700_today/8700_dimension_zen.jad

2 - when Verizon makes their OS available online, i'll have you the Zen theme up.

3 - as Pizzle mentioned, i'm kind of MIA for a few days. i just got out of surgery (tonsillectomy) about 1.5 hours ago, although i'm feeling REALLY good (YAY LORTAB ELIXIR) right now, so i may not be away for as long as i thought.

you can try them as well... they should work, maybe. the vodafone today theme requires the standard vodafone theme to be installed (net_rim_theme_120_320x240), although in more recent versions of the OS, they've renamed the file. the only way we've been able to get it working on these versions was to remove the newer vodafone theme (net_rim_theme_120_320x240_8700v or something like that) and install an older version along with the today theme. all of these can be found in the Today themes thread.

if you have issues, just post them up. i'll be on later after i wake up. pain killers are making me sleepy.

Zen was only supported by a certain OS version and higher (I believe it was 4.1.0.212 or something like that); Cingular was the first out of the gate and has yet to update their OS, so Zen is not supported on any stock 8700c (running 4.1.0.175).

For the center key on the voda today its pulling its prefference from the dimension zen, so even when you set it to something other than app list once you change from the zen theme it goes back to its default causing voda to revert to app list.

Question: can voda/ voda today work without the zen theme?

UPDATE
if ur on zen and change center key, when you restart ur BB it reverts to default
