Default BES for Domino Install Guide / References

Please Login to Remove!

Inspired by: BBAdmin's BES Prerequisites Thread, Need guide on how to install BES for lotus notes, and the general lack of love for Domino here ... I figured I'd put something together with resources on installing Domino for BES.

My general best practice recommendation for everyone is really to just download and read the documentation provided by RIM. Installation guides, administration guides, and other guides are generally well put together.

I guess this thread is to serve as a starting point for a new Domino BES Admin or someone just needing some quick documentation / answers. Being an Exchange person myself, Domino doesn't come natural to me ... but (and I may regret saying this later), it ain't all that bad.

So here we go ...

First off, attached to this post is the series of documentation released for Domino BES 4.1 SP5 which includes:

BlackBerry Enterprise Server for IBM Lotus Domino - Installation Guide
BlackBerry Enterprise Server for IBM Lotus Domino - Upgrade Guide
BlackBerry Enterprise Server for IBM Lotus Domino - Administration Guide
BlackBerry Enterprise Server for IBM Lotus Domino - Release Notes
BlackBerry Enterprise Server for IBM Lotus Domino - Policy Reference Guide
BlackBerry Monitoring Service - Installation and User Guide

I really really really recommend any new admin first review the installation guide. Print it out, and give it a complete once over. Every production BES install I perform I have the current installation guide with me. I use it as a checklist and recommend y'all out there use it just the same.

Next, here are some links I've blatently stolen from a post by noname:

Article Title: Prepare the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for multiple Domino domains
Article Number: KB05221

Article Title: How to configure address book lookups between different Domino domains
Article Number: KB10460

Article Title: Minimum Access Control List permissions for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server
Article Number: KB01469

Article Title: List of port requirements for BlackBerry Enterprise Server for IBM Lotus Domino
Article Number: KB01278

Article Title: Firewall and connection requirements for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server
Article Number: KB03735

----------

For those of you that like to continually learn, I'd highly recommend checking out some BlackBerry Blogs, and if you're into reading KB articles like me, check out the KB Article RSS Feeds RIM has ...

Other great resources:

If anyone has anything else to contribute please post it here. I'll be sure to update this first post in the thread.

Great post!!! I probably could've used this over a year ago. :P

You are right, I used RIM's guides for our installation and its pretty straight forward. Definitely print those out and have them with you when installing your potential BES for Domino. There are little things that need to be taken care of first that I most likely would've missed.

Default Monitor BES for Domino using Performance counter

I am unable to see any instances when adding BlackBerry Server Perfomance object. All counters for Blackberry server are listed, but instances are grayed out.

I hope you have not done so. The answer is NO; the reason being that the database schema for your 4.0.7 is DIFFERENT from your 4.1.6 in the BESMGMT SQL database. What you can do is upgrade your old box to 4.1sp6, then use the cutover KB article. This will involves modifying the database tables and it is advisable to get yourself a SQL guy to work along with you during the cutover.

Article Title: How to perform a cutover to another BlackBerry Enterprise Server in an IBM Lotus Domino environment
Article Number: KB04261
Link: View Document

Also do not be AMBIOUS during the cutover e.g. include other tasks like Domino upgrade, shifting your BlackBerry Router to a remote computer. If anything fails, you can trust that you will not be able to pin point where went wrong should any misfortune falls on your upgrade. I have seen too many of this

Lastly, do not forgot to BACKUP, BACKUP and BACKUP your live BESMGMT database as well as the Domino BES folder.

Thumbs up Knowledge Sharing - Update the BES after an IBM Lotus Domino domain change

Chance upon this good KB article today by an incident:-

Article Title: Update the BlackBerry Enterprise Server after an IBM Lotus Domino domain change
Article Number: KB15023
Link: View Document

Task 1 - Update the BlackBerry Configuration Database

The following commands for updating the BlackBerry Configuration Database must be run while the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services are stopped.

Use the -E parameter for Windows Authentication or the -U parameter for SQL Authentication.
  1. Type OSQL - S <sqlservername> -U <username> and then press ENTER.
  2. Type the following commands in the specified order:
1> use <databasename>

2>
go

1>
UPDATE serverconfig set servicename = 'CN=BES/O=XYZ' where servicename = 'CN=BBMail/ABC'

2> go

Task 2 - Change the BlackBerry smartphone users to the new messaging server
In BlackBerry Manager, complete the following:
  1. Select the All Users tab.
  2. From the main menu, select View > Choose Columns.
  3. Add the Mail Server column to the visible columns, and then click OK.
  4. Sort the user list by the Mail Server column.
  5. Using the Shift key select all the BlackBerry smartphone users that show the old mail server.
  6. From the Account tasks, select Change Directory Server.
  7. Select the new mail server from the drop-down list or type the name of the server.
  8. Click OK.
Remark: Useful article when your company merges with another and you are changing the Domino domain name.
