Yes, BlackBerry devices are assigned IP addresses whenever they are connected to a data network (whether cellular or WiFi).

That is true, each BB has a different IP address that is automatically allocated by the BlackBerry servers

To find out your BB's IP address simply go to What's My IP? with your BlackBerry browser. The ip address will be different when connected to wifi compared to when using the mobile network. It will also change periodically as on the mobile network they are assigned dynamically.

In general mobile phones do not have an IP address assigned to them.
(There's a few exceptions to this, such as WiFi connectivity and iDen.)

Your mobile phone connects to the carrier's network over a specific transport and the carrier's network acts as an IP gateway between your handheld and the Internet.
The device itself doesn't really have an IP address of its own.

Using a service such as "What's my IP" isn't really showing you the IP address of your handhed. You're seeing a randomly assigned IP address of your carrier's IP gateway.

Care to back that up with specific knowledge or a source?

They do have an IP address when attached to the cellular network, but it is usually provided as through Network Address Translation (NAT), which is what makes your statement hold true.

So i upgraded my 9700 to OS6 yesterday and noticed something odd...

I'm being assinged an IP that's owned by RIM and located in Canada. I'm fairly certain that this didnt happen before the upgrade and I was always assigned a T-Mobile IP which is what I would expect.

anybody have any thoughts on this?

It's not odd. When you use the Internet Browser on the device, you're using RIM's network infrastructure for transport.

My guess is that you were using the carrier's WAP browser prior to upgrading to OS 6.

With OS 6, the browser selection is more intelligent and the device will essentially "choose the best browser for the task" when you make a web request.

ahh... that makes sense. the only reason i noticed is because i got redirected to the netflix.ca when i went to netflix.com. I'm pretty sure i always left the browser set to internet or bb on os5, i dont remember which because i was always switching settings trying to make it work better. I definitely dont think it was ever set to wap though... oh well. thanks for the info.
