Ok so calling the product support center I've gotten two of the same answers:

Garmin Mobile XT product ONLY works in the following OS's:

Symbian
Palm
Windows Mobile

It does not work in the BB OS.

There you go, there's your answer. I'll update the original post.

You have to buy the stupid subscription and then get the maps OTA which sucks. Stupid Garmin.

I'm considering trying this out once I get a Curve 8310 -- when they confirm support for the Rogers 8700r. (probably works)
yeah, it could be that the rep I talked to did not have all the facts? not sure.

typcially though I have not found garmin cust. service to be as bad as people here would portray.

Here is what I found.

Add full-featured navigation to your GPS-enabled smartphone with Garmin Mobile XT. Just plug this data card into your compatible phone¹ (see specs tab) and start navigating. With no monthly fees, preloaded maps, turn-by-turn directions, real-time services and only $99, this easy-to-use data card has everything you need to navigate to the front door.

Go Anywhere
With no network coverage required, Garmin Mobile XT works anywhere. Simply plug the microSD card (with miniSD and standard SD card converters) into your compatible phone with built-in GPS and go. Since Garmin Mobile XT works outside your phone's coverage area, you'll get directions when you need them most.

Navigate with Ease
Packed with preloaded maps, millions of destinations and full GPS navigation capabilities, Garmin Mobile XT turns your phone into a powerful street navigator. Its intuitive interface greets you with two simple questions "Where to?" and "View Maps." Easily look up addresses and services and get voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions to your destination. Enjoy 3-D mapping and advanced features such as saved routes and tracks, custom avoidances and visible trip logs. With Garmin Mobile XT, you can also upload custom points of interest, such as school zones and safety cameras and conveniently navigate to contacts in your address book.

Get Traffic, Weather and More
Garmin Mobile XT includes access to a wide range of Garmin Online™ services such as traffic, weather, gas prices, hotel rates and more. Receive real-time traffic information from traffic.com about traffic tie-ups and road construction that lie ahead on your route and navigate around congestion. View hotel rates, ratings and availability information from hotels.com. Even get the weather forecast for your location or anywhere in the world and compare local gas prices when you travel with your phone. Garmin online is accessed through your phone's wireless data service.

See and Navigate to Users
With Garmin Mobile XT's PeerPoints™ feature, you can text message your position to any other phone as well as view and navigate to the location of Garmin Mobile XT users in your group. Simply send your current position via text messaging to your Garmin Mobile XT partner's phone, and your location shows up on your partner's map page. PeerPoints is the perfect feature to keep track of friends and family at an amusement park, lake or other outdoor group activity.

¹If your phone has built-in GPS, your wireless carrier may block usage of it. Check with your carrier regarding the availability of GPS for add-on mapping software.

I'm not clear on why a subscription and OTA maps makes Garmin stupid, when that is the way that EVERY Blackberry navigation package has ever worked, and I've used them starting with the Nextel 7520 6 or 7 years ago.

I can understand complaining if their support is bad, or the app doesn't route well, for example.

If I was developing for the BB market, I wouldn't invest in multiple path development to support models with and without SD cards either. Not until the majority of units in use have them at least.

In the past 6 or 7 years I've always found it a convenience not to have to screw around with maps on a card. When I've used Windows Mobile, it wasn't perfect either, since I had to use EITHER my SD card with my maps, or my SD card with my work data, or my SD card with MP3's on it, but never all of them.

I can definitively say this... it doesn't work with a Verizon 8830 and an iBlue 737 puck, which leads me to believe that it is either a Verizon-specific or a Garmin receiver-specific limitation. Not sure which.

I did the Handmark thing and will now cancel.

I'm bummed, because the interface looked nice and well designed. I also have a Garmin handheld GPS that is great and based on that experience, I was hoping that I had an alternative to Telenav. Alas, no.

The problem is that it's USELESS if you need to travel outside of the cellular data coverage area or coverage drops in marginal areas. You would need to have to have a backup device such as a Nuvi for those cases, so you might as well not bother with the Garmin subscription at all.
Also, just because they store the POI data on their servers, that doesn't mean that data actually gets updated more than once a year. If it was updated daily like Google Local listings, that would be worth something.

They could also either preload the maps on a large capacity SD card with space to load your own MP3 files or let you copy the maps onto your own card like Mapopolis did.

Since they have the ability to turn off your service at any time on their end, they should allow you to cancel the service at anytime with a refund of remaining unused time.
If you could use it forever without an active account, then not being able to get refunds would be more understandable.
