Default WiFi on planes = Phones on planes, I fear

I take trips requiring a plane about 4 times each year. From my POV, this is a bad idea. I will go CRAZY being held hostage, unable to escape, while the dolt next to me shouts to his business associate using Skype on the plane. And you know that's what people will do, just because they can...

This is not necessarily true. The airlines will most likely use port blocking to prevent anything other than browsing and e-mail.

When some airlines had the Boeing Connexion service, it was heavily controlled.

There have already been some people using ustream live on Virgin America. Would you rather have someone broadcasting a live video / audio feed from their laptop / cell phone or someone talking on the phone? I think its all ok as long as they are not yelling, then it needs to stop.

Emirates allows you to use your phones on their European Sectors (as far as i know). I travelled from Dubai to Zurich and they specifically announced you could switch on your mobiles. They didn't restrict what kind of usage. I find it a bit of a pain.. you need a few hours of peace.. unless of course it's a life and death situation!

yeh i kinda agree that long durations and the person next to you just blabbing in your ear might become annoying, just look their might be more incidence reports of people getting their phone busted in flight

I also wouldn't want the ridiculous roaming charges. I imagine it will be something like the rates on the sattelite phones in the plane. The only thing I would do is SMS from the plane. Those charges are tolerable.

I believe most of them will yell because of the noise of the plane. I believe they will also be more inclined to believe they should be able to talk/yell if they want because it's a service they've paid for.

Last paragraph of the article:

"Carriers are reluctant to make cellphone connections available during flights, partly for technical and bandwidth reasons and partly to avoid problems between passengers seeking quiet and those talking loudly to be heard above flight noise."

It struck me as ironic that they would enable WiFi, and then say "but we won't allow phones" for the reasons stated above.

I hope dc/dc is right, and that they use blocking heavily.

I usually have my noise-canceling hf on for flights now. To me usually the sound of the plane itself usually drowns out most of the people. I hope it stays that way but I love the idea of wifi while in the air.

It doesn't bother me that much. I have seen a lot more annoying things while flying than people talking on the phone. The worst was the guy next to me with the runny nose and a constant cough. I was sick three days later. As far as loud and obnoxious go, I am capable of solving that with tact or without if necessary.

I don't see much of a problem with it...I fly 3-4 times a week and if it is not a guy talking on his phone, its kids, or talky talkerton, who wants to share his life story. That's what headphones are for.

What is your best story about solving it without tack? Inquiring minds want to know.
