Default Best IM app to use for AOL IM?

Please Login to Remove!

My first BB - what is the best app to use for AOL IM on this thing? I ONLY need AOL IM and preferably would like to be able to setup away messages if possible.

Anyone?

The best app would be on that RIM should go ahead and create, like the Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger ones. Anyone know why they haven't yet?

Carriers. They have not accepted it yet, T-Mobile has the SMS based client which generates a lo of revenue for them, and cingy...well cingy just plain sucks when it comes to this stuff, they don't even offer Yahoo, or MMS on the 8700

That's the SMS client that boygenius is referring to. F that SMS "IM" crap. IM apps should use data, NOT SMS. I wonder if Ramble IM will work on the 8100.

I've pretty much ditched AIM for gTalk and YIM at this point... unless I want to get a sidekick (the only thing a sidekick is good for!), all of the various AIM clients suck in my opinion. If RIM did release an AIM client i might sign back into it, but for now I'm boycotting lol.

I was using gtalk on my 7130g but unless your chatting partner has gmail open at that exact time, it's kind of useless.

The built in aim client while some fake IM sms based thing is barely passable enough because everyone I know has AIM on all the time. Although the "online" list doesn't update until you try to message them.

I wish there was a proper client. There's that Fandango one, is it any good?

I used to use the Verizon "Mobile IM" program that they have on their LG phones, and while it did indeed have the issue of not updating the buddy list, it was very reliable and there was no delay in receiving or sending messages.

I guess the reason they do not update on their own is that they use SMS messages when they update the buddy list. So instead you would choose "update buddy list" from the menu when you wanted it to update. Is the T-Mobile OZ IM program the same?

And how reliable is that program? Does it keep you signed on or do you get signed off when you lose signal? What about delays in getting messages?

I'm considering porting over to T-Mobile and getting the 8100. I do lots of text messaging so I would get unlimited SMS anyway. I would like to be able to use the built in IM program. While I don't stay signed on 24/7, I will sometimes sign on for a few hours and I expect that it won't sign me off without me knowing. I also expect to receive all messages that are sent to me in a timely fashion.

I use yak-on as well, although I do notice a considerable battery drain.

But, I used to use google talk proxying for everything very reliably. I think it was more reliable than any of the others I used. *** The key here is it is more reliable when the Transports you are using are good togo. Once they go, then it is a major pain in the ass to get going again. But while they are up, there was no better. And GTalk was completely free. I used it for MSN, AIM, and Yahoo and liked it the best.

Yak-On has a great user interface with the tab'd chat windows.

Is there any place I could see screen shots of this program? They don't seem to have any at their website.

I use ramble and it's very serviceable. Never tried any others, so I can't comment.

If you do a search Mark Rejohn has a great review of just the ifno you looking for as well as links to the sites. I'd recomend starting there and then asking more specefic questions.
