Default using wi-fi instead of data plan in another country

Please Login to Remove!

Hi
I live in canada and just visited las vegas. in the hotel they had wi-fi access and i did set it up on my bold9000.
I did not get the extra data package to save me money while out of canada.
What i want to know is, will i still be charged data usage to check my email or go on facebook if i am going thru the hotel wi-fi?
if so is there a way not to be charged?
would turning off mobile network do it?

Yes, you will be charged expensive roaming data if you are using the mobile network, without WiFi.

If you turn OFF the mobile network (or data when roaming off) and use WiFi, you will not be charged for data.

Turning the Mobile Network off is one way of preventing large data charges while roaming, but it will also disable phone and SMS. If that is what you want, then that is the easiest way to go.

Turning Data Services Off will turn data services off. You will not have data when only connnected to the Mobile Network (preventing charges) but you will also not have data services (Mail, BBM, BIS-B, etc) when on Wi-Fi. Data Services off means data services off.

Turning Data Services to off while Roaming will turn data services off when the only connection is a roaming Mobile Network, but will be on when a Wi-Fi connection is available. This will allow your BlackBerry to pickup mainl, BBM message etc when you enter into Wi-Fi service, but will prevent it from connecting to the expensive non-Home Mobile network. You will still be able to make and receive phone calls and SMS messages. This is what most people want.

The final option is to leave everything on. Everything works wherever you have cell coverage but you get the big bill when you get home.

I tried just turning data services off. i left roaming on, and i do have a wifi connection established. And all i can do is make and receive calls, and sms. Anything else i try says i need a data connection.

You set it backwards.

Leave data ON and turn Data while Roaming to OFF.

I have the same question and just to verify, I'm in Mexico right now and when I connected to the wifi, I instantly started to receive texts and all that. If I turn off roaming, will I be charged massive for using the web browser to download attachments from my email and to send texts and all that?

If you turn data off while roaming the device will not use a non-home carrier to send data, so you won't be charged.

You can't send or receive text messages on Wi-Fi, text messages are not data. If you are receiving text messages how much it will cost will depend on what you are chared for international text messaging.
