Default Autotext deleted/will not restore after Software upgrade ?

Please Login to Remove!

I sucessfully moved from a 9700 (OS5) to a 9900.
The battery performance of <8hrs and reports of people which tried the .440 version made me install it because of the maybe better battery lifetime.

However, after the automatic backup and restore, the BB Desktop software told me that it had problems restoring the autotext database.
indeed, all my customizations are gone.

I tried to restore the database from the last backup. But, the Desktop software refuses and sees this database as read-only.
(I had manually disabled wireless sync, on the Device & Server, turned off wireless backup and deleted the sync servicebook on the device). Still this database shows as read only.

Interestingly, it seems that not the restore of the database is the problem, because the automatic loader backup of this database contains 0 records, but the last backup I made of the 9700 had 187 entries.

I then tried another activation, watched the progress, and, word substition finished sucessful. However, still only the standard items in the Autotext database.

I had the same thing when I tried to use my 9700 with OS6. With every upgrade of the OS my autotext database was zeroed to default.
When I upgraded the 9700 from OS6 to OS5 everything worked again as it should.

From what I know see, it rather looks like the automatic sync and backup of autotext/word substitions is just broken after OS5 (the BES is 5.0.3).

At the moment it seems I have to reactivate the 9700 to get back my autotext, and then, again migrate this to the 9900. But this is tedious and time-consuming. I might rather just sell the 9900 and stay with the 9700.

Does anyone know a workaround how to get back the autotext stored in the last 9700 backup ?

Followup:
I again activated the 9700. The autotext was restored sucessfull using the wireless backup.
Maybe, when RIM changed "autotext" to "word substitution" they forgot to create a database with this name on the BES ?

That worked well for me, I did:

9700 (OS 5) > 9700 (OS 6) > 9780 (OS 6) > 9900 (OS 7)

In your case I would try to find out why a manual selective backup and a selective restore are not working. After deleting the Sync service book, it should work. Can you restore other databases (that are in the automatic OTA backup)?

I checked this:
The list of databases is different when I delete the sync service book. But some Databases (including the autotext) are still grayed out.
I will try that again now on the 9700 I have activated.

Your case might be different:
I always have this problem when I update the firmware on my current device, if the software version is >5.
When I moved to a new device with new software, the migration or OTA restore is ok.
only when I update the current device (OS >5) with a minor software update, my autotext is lost.
This:
9700 (OS 5) > 9700 (OS 6) > 9780 (OS 6) > 9900 (OS 7)
worked for me too.

I now checked If am am able to restore autotext with OS5 on the 9700, and, indeed it works as it should.

Strange.
I anyone is willing to try if there is really not only an issue with my software or devices:
add some autotext on a 9700 with OS6 or on an 9900 with OS7.
wait a little until the automatic backup should have syncronised this with the server
Load a newer firmware (minor release update) on the BB.
Will your autotext be backuped and restored, or not ?

See the supportforums . b lackberry . com postings under "AutoText backup & restore" (I cant post a URL here) for a related thread. One note: When a bold 9900 backup shows "Word Substitutions = 3" it really does have ALL the word substitutions (assuming you are doing a backup FROM and TO the Bold 9900). I tested this with a 2nd 9900 and it worked fine (my work device after removing Desktop (SYNC) as suggested to un-grey-out Word Substition in the selective restore screen.) This does not help with the upgrade issue (e.g. Bold 9700 to Bold 9900) -- I had to manually enter everything in the 9900. But at least having done that once I am happy I dont have to do it again!!! Hope this helps somewhat.

I have had the same issue with os 6 and 7 on BES 4.1.7. but weird part is that with new versions of loader it will copy over some of the auto text.

BES also has some sync errors for those on os 6 n 7.

another weird part is if you activate a OS 5 ( but was using an OS 6 or 7 device) device the auto text comes back.
