Can someone confirm if they are able to get Wi-Fi w/o being charged? Then what they did to get it done. I have changed all my browser settings to Hotspot, even downloaded opera mini. I thought it was an AT&T thing but now I see it’s just the way Rim set it up for some reason. I can set my network it just won’t add the check mark next to it. just keeps the gray dash.

Please use the SEARCH function. This has been covered many times over and over. There are some that say they have been able to do it, but don't say how. Others that say no way. I suggest you read through all the threads and try to find an answer.

That's weird its not working for you. When I left the country for a couple weeks, I canceled my data plan for that time, and was able to continue using wifi. I had my browser settings set to Hotspot. Other than that, there was nothing else done. I found that I couldn't use Opera, but had to use the Bberry brower. I'm guessing opera doesn't use wifi.

Have you changed the way Opera connects? Tried Bolt Browser? HTTP or TCP/IP may help with the WiFi connection.

I think the reason it worked is that you still had the service books, even if you did not have the data plan.

This won't help you. As soon as you reboot, they will be gone.

wifi WILL NOT WORK without a data plan. You will be on the internet true enough, but you WILL be getting billed. I went over this a thousand times with AT&T. I also thought, "well, I shouldn't have to pay for wifi because its free". they will definitely charge you.

Being on tmobile, and having a data plan, I'll take you at your word so far as AT&T policies and rates. But just out of curiosity, how exactly does the carrier know you are using the hotspot browser? What if one disabled wireless with only wifi enabled?

Just curious. This is fascinating.

Here's a thread from the AT&T forums. I linked to the BBF FAQ, they said it was wrong and linked to a thread showing some have data with wifi.

I have a data plan so it isn't that important to me, but maybe it will help you. If you get charged, don't look at me, I'm just passing the information along. Try it at your own risk.

My GF has a Bold with Rogers. She purposely put a block on data to save cash. She can surf on WiFi no problem. I have confirmed that data is blocked by turning of wifi and surfing. Doesn't work. When WiFi is back up and running it's all good.

Not sure why Wifi would be blocked for people without data plans. Very money grabby if you ask me. BTW I have tried to get her to get a data plan but she says she doesn't need it. Kind of a waste of a Bold isn't it? lol Whateves, it was free!

This is nonsense.
Ignore it.

You don't even need a SIM card in the device in order to be able to browse using the hotspot browser.

Thought so, but couldn't dismiss that there might be something about AT&T I didn't know.

I haven't tried without my SIM, but I have turned off the wirless network and just used wifi. Just can't see how the carrier could know what I was doing under those circumstances.

Since you don't need the data plan to use wifi, the BBF FAQ be updated.

I don't see what you see.

Saying wifi works (or doesn't work) without a data plan is meaningless.

The faq does not say you need a data plan to use wifi. It cites specific functions (push email, UMA, for examples) for which a data plan is required.

You do not need a data plan to use the hotspot browser to browse the internet.

I don't see an error.
