that blue tower is an approximate tower location, and the circle around it would be your radius from that tower. when you go to "my location" in google maps does it tell you "your approximate location within XXX meters"

I think I've got it- so what you're saying is that google maps is not using GPS, just using a "cell tower location index" to show me the my general location via a blue dot on the nearest cell tower. It now makes sense why it only gets close and not exact.
Thanks for the info, guys!

That is correct... which is not half bad, and especially for using GMM to find stuff nearby pizza or gas station if you were traveling in an unfamiliar area

I have verizon (or maybe they have me!). If I use the google mapping, is that covered under my unlimited DATA plan for the BB or is this cellphone time or some other DATA that is employed by google to use the tower information (I do wish I could get my tomtom920 to bluetooth data with the 8830).

Well, let's see.
I'm on the Verizon Carrier.
Yesterday I opened up Maps and was pinpointed to my location. I liked the map and all and didn't find much interesting in browsing around further.
Later in the day I downloaded google maps and was once again pointed to my location. I did satellite view and almost saw my building (off by some feet). I entered new location anad set my home address to caalculate a direction thing and it worked... I was very impressed. I press the # to go to next direction step, etc.

That is not showing your exact location as GPS would. It is showing the location of which tower you are on. The 5000 meters is your approx location to that said tower.

No, This OS is to use VZNavigator. You can use google maps fine without this version.

5000 meters = 3.1 miles... no so specific?

If you read this ENTIRE thread, you will quickly discover your 5000 meter location is from cell town location, not GPS.

You are not so lucky... overpaying though likely.

In this thread:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...lackberry.html

There was a mention of a daily gps "plan" from Verizon.

"Her suggestion was to purchase the VZ Navigator for a daily use for like $2 and that permanently opens the GPS hardware on the device so I can use third party applications with it."

Does anyone know if this works? Can one turn on gps say for testing their program and then just now use Verizon's option?

It's true, if there isn't a data connection available, like almost any other cell phone with verizon, the gps won't connect. Mine works fine when the connection is live.

Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones...although I think it's cause the force is strong with me.
