Using the 8700g as a modem for my laptop
Please Login to Remove!
OK ok, first, YES I know that there is a FAQ and thread on this. It did not help me.
I am using a Sony VAIO FJ170, XP Home, SP2. I have the 8700g, just got it 2-3 days ago, so I am assuming all software is up to date and current.
When you are trying to set this up, one of the instructions said to put the proxy in the APN field. I am confused here, and maybe that is why the whole thing is not working. When I go to set up the modem, the COM6 port never even comes up. So, if you have the time, I would really appreciate somebody walking me thru this. I am a total newbie to BB's, so I kinda have to hunt around for the setting and everything.
Thanks in advance!

Did you notice any additional charges with your wireless carrier? (even if you have the "unlimited data" plan...)
Thanks...

Nope. I use T-Mobile, and when I log on, the only other option in the BES addition, which I don't (think) that I need.

Tethering worked fine for me last week on my 8700g.
So what's your question exactly?

My question is how EXACTLY to do it. I followed the insturctions on a different thread, to the letter. It will not connect, gives me an error message. The computer recognizes it on COM6, everytihng. I am thinking that maybe because it was Cingular set-up instructions, not T-Mobile, it could be why. It even had me put in a configuration string, which another thread said should be deleted. Either way, it is not working. How exactly did you configure yours?

I followed the FAQ to the letter, worked fine.
Then later I couldn't make it connect -- when I went into phone/modem properties, I couldn't make contact with the modem to query it. Then I rebooted. Then I was happy again.
Keep trying!

I am using my 8700g with my laptop and pc both.
1. install latest desktop mgr.
2. desktop-->my computer -->manage-->device manager
Ports/USB-- there should be one virtual RIM port. if there are two then disable the next one. keep lower one.
3. Make sure BB is connected and create New connection from Network Connections. select "connect to internet"
4. Select Dial-up option.
5. no passwd no userid.. just dial-up number is #99# and save it.
you are good to go.

You can only use the bluetooth to tether if you purchase the mobishark modem software.

i just double checked it says it doest. Im sorry, for some reason i thought it did before.
Since it doesnt support bluetooth i would suggest you take the free route and and follow the instructions on the website to set the bb as a modem via the DM.

Maybe I am being thick headed here and I do not mean to be but what difference does it make in the instructions as to whether it is for a laptop or a Home PC. I have been able to tether following the instructions here with both though I Have a 7250 instead, but the instructions did not ask me to do anything different for either one.

No difference between a laptop and a desktop w.r.t. BB tethering.
Sometimes it helps to "Querry" the BB modem prior to dialing. There is a querry button on one of the property sheets under modem properties from control panel.
