Default Rogers Canada Roaming Cost fell from 3c/KB down to 1c/KB

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

Just a heads up to mention that Rogers Canada has dropped USA roaming from 3c/KB to 1c/KB as of September 1st, 2004. That's a 66% discount, everyone, good news for us Canadians who frequently visit USA.

Rogers Blackberries roam on: TMobile, AT&T, Cingular, Cincinnati Bell, and a few others.

On my last visit at 3c/KB, I paid $36 for 1 week of heavy roaming including lots of emails and even a few webpages. That will fall to $12 for the same usage during a 1-week USA visit. Not too bad. A big improvement I'm looking forward to when I go to Indianapolis for CEDIA!

(This assumes you have a Rogers Blackberry Plan)

Pinch me! I have trouble with the concept of Rogers offering any sort of discount or price break...

They may have figured it is possible to earn more profit on data roaming at $10/megabyte than $30/megabyte because more people will roam. Even $10/megabyte (1 cent per kilobyte) is fairly expensive, however, most average Blackberry users don't even exceed 3 megabytes a month. (I usually do between 10-25 megabytes a month, mostly in Canada) 1 megabyte is enough for approximately 500 average emails including overhead.

Does anyone know how much it would cost for a Rogers Blackberry user to
roam in Paris?

Please look at Roger's website to look that up. The Rogers international roaming cost is about 5 cents per kilobyte, in 10 kilobyte increments (50 cent increments). So that makes it 5 times more expensive than roaming in USA.

Mark, this 10 kb 50 cent increment....does that simply mean at the end of the trip they'll round it up to the nearest 50 cents? or does it mean every time i send a 2kb message it'll cost me 50 cents?

Probably somewhere in between. If you send multiple messages in a short time period, it'll count inside the same 10 kilobytes. However, if you lose reception and get back (BlackBerry reconnection), the data meter probably starts over again. I don't know what the conditions are, like antenna-tower changes, roaming carrier switchovers, timeouts in XX minutes or hours, reception loss-and-gain events, blackberry poweroff/poweron, etc, or such, but there's many situations where the data meter is automatically reset for the 10 kilobytes increments. The net result is some of your messages will be 50 cents and other messages of yours will just a few pennies each, it will vary depending on the conditions.

Do NOT VOUCH ME ON THIS though -- but this is an educated hypothesis based on my understanding of how data measuring works.

You may unfortunately be right it may be the worse-case scenario, but I cannot say for sure.

Ok Thanks Mark for all the info, I will try to verify from Rogers. Is there a way to turn off BES wireless sync while roaming, so it's not sending out little packets all the time. Or what I might do is turn the radio off and put it on every 6 hours or so to get and send all my saved up messages and synch at once. From what you're saying, that might be the best way to save money.
