Question If we have SBS 2003 w/exchange is BES Necessary?

Please Login to Remove!

The company that I am working with, we are setting up Microsoft Small Business Server 2003. This has exchange server with direct push. We are only working with 5 users, so they don't want huge expenses.

Do they need BlackBerry Enterprise Server?

They plan on purchasing 7100i phones from Sprint.

Thanks.

You may get the blackberry enterprise server for free and you do not have to pay for any additional licenses.

do a google search for "bes express"

keep registering pins to get additional license keys to put into the bes server.

You may also load bes on Server 2003 sbs. I have done so at a few clients.

The only thing your company has to pay for is the devices and wireless service.

This is not true.
Only 1 BES CAL is included with BES Express.
You need to purchase additional CALs if you want more than 1 device on the BES. You can add up to 15 on BES Express.

You are completely incorrect.

You may go onto the bes express site and register as many devices as you like. You then obtain the license number online and input it into the bes server. As long as it is a bes small business edition, you can input 15 single license cals into the server.

I know, I have done it dozens of times.

Just because you *can* do it, doesn't mean you *should* be doing it.
You're violating license agreements, and what you're doing is dishonest, and illegal.
I can download copies of Windows, Office, Photoshop and just about any other software from the internet for free... but that doesn't make it right.

Promoting license violation is a stupid move here.

I understand what you are saying but you are incorrect again. I have contacted RIM regarding this and they have told me that when a user or company purchases a device, that device automatically comes with a "cal". That cal can be activated and put onto a bes server. The license is already purchased.

why companies shell out money for 5-user packs, and more is beyond me.

There is nothing illegal about using the license that came with the device.

Nope... incorrect.
A BES CAL is not automatically included with the purchase of a device and/or Blackberry data plan.
BES CALs must be purchased separately. They're usually about $100 each, but you can get volume discounts if purchased in larger quantity packs.

Not sure who at RIM told you this, but they are mistaken, or you've merely misunderstood what they've told you.

Because that what's your supposed to do! You need to buy a CAL for every device you add to a BES. Again, a BES cal is not inluded with the device.
Think about it, my friend. Why do you think that BES cals are even available for purchase?
You think RIM is just trying to fake us all out?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8320/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Yes

If that were the case then their wouldn't be a bes express. I have a few rim contacts.

Yes most companies do fake you out, and we are talking the small biz/ express licensing, not actual enterprise.

OK, you have every right to argue, but you're still wrong here.
BES Express gives you ONE FREE BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express licence, and ONE FREE device CAL. You can expand BES Express to 15 users, at additional cost... not free.
See here: (Yes, this is RIMs website.)
BlackBerry
If you're too damn lazy to click the link... allow me to cut & paste a snippit for you. I bolded the important part.

"BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express xxx8211; Small Business Edition is the free way to experience what BlackBerry® solutions have to offer. With this software, you get:
~ One free BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express xxx8211; Small Business Edition v4.1
~ One user included, expandable to 15 users (at additional cost)
~ One complimentary BlackBerry support incident that can be used to access BlackBerry Technical Support should you require assistance."

I'm also talking about BES Express. Once you go past 15 users, then you don't even qualify for BES express and must upgrade to the full BES.

Here's another page from RIMs website which explains the 15 user limit, and how to order the additional CALs if you need more than the ONE WHICH IS INCLUDED with BES Express.
BlackBerry - BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express

Your RIM contacts are wrong. You are wrong as well.

DietCoke - better back down on this. RIM does not give away CALs with every BlackBerry. You are supposed to pay for them.
