Default request for new application

Please Login to Remove!

Hi ya'll. I have a problem and a quick question for all you developers. Since my personal programming skills consist of the single dos command "run", I need some help with an application idea I came up with. As an over-the-road truck driver I consistently need to know the time zone I am in. Since my 7100g is not capable of updating the time zone as I travel from one to another, I am in need of an application that will do this for me. The only features I need in an application like this are to make sure that the current time zone is displayed on the home screen. Displaying both my home terminal time zone and the currant time zone I am in would be a bonus, but is not necessary. If any of you crackberry addicts feel like tackling this problem, it would be greatly appreciated.

how does the app "know" the time zone you are in?
or do you just want to enter it manually?

On the 7100g the o\s can see the network time, i.e. the timezone that the tower is in, but will not display it on the home screen. The phone will only display the timezone that you choose in time\date settings. Mine is currently set to eastern.

Wirelessly posted (BB 7100g: BlackBerry7100/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

I take it from the lack of replys that this is prolly not doable.

A good place to post a question like that or find what you're looking for is sourceforge.net

They have loads upon loads (no pun intended) of good applications. If you cant find what you're looking for, ask to see one made. I am sure someone can provide you with some friendly information.

i took a (short) browse through the API and it looks like java.util.TimeZone can give you the current time zone.
IF your BB switches the timezone automatically (i.e. displays your current local time depending on your place) it would not be too difficult to develop a small app that shows the timezone you startet the program in (f.e.) and the one you are currently driving in.

i never took my BB into another timezone. if it switches automatically contact me and i can write a program for you.

Our BBs do not switch the timezone automatically, even if the date/time source is set to Network. We have a range of units on Rogers and Bell, with users travelling all over North America and internationally, and this is a major complaint from users. I've asked RIM about it and they were surprised to find out it didn't happen, but offered no solutions :(

I travel through all four u.s. Time zones twice a week. It probably is supposed to but it will not update the time zone unless you change it manually in settings. For the unit to do this automatically would be a rather useful capability for those of us who travel, I could not make heads or tails of source forge. Would someone who knows their way around mind posting for me?

I think I can probably handle this one for you, give me a few days...

The way I'll do it is to have 3 fields, each can be ordered, or removed.

GMT

Your Home Time

Your Locational Time.

Is that cool?

That would be more than cool. One small feature request? Make the GMT field so it can be changed to eastern, and the home field changed to central? Much appreciated.
As far as this problem being over looked by rim in the api, hannahkat, I think they were caught with their compilers around their ankles. Rim may fix that in a future OS update. But this kind of proggy would definitly help my work.

How about coding against one of the GPS enabled BBs such as the 7100i?

Perhaps some s/w already exists that would do the trick(?)

Considering this is Blackberry, I am surprise there's no programs that shows different time zones.

As for changing time zones automatically on the phone, I am not sure if this is possible.

How about just an option to display network time or timezone time?

I would settle for that?

is that hard to implement?
