BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.6.0.438
Multilanguage; contains English
From AT&T; This will load to any carrier's 9000.

The interesting thing to note on this file is the increased Software Platform version (4.0.0.217 vs. 4.0.0.206)
and the Package release is 4.6.0.438 vs the older 4.6.0.418).

This is in comparison to other releases of the 9000 OS 4.6.0.167. and that this file was released today (04/29/2009) by AT&T.

Software For BlackBerry® Bold (TM) 9000 smartphone
BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.6.0.438 (Multilanguage)
Package Version: 4.6.0.438
Consisting of:
  • Applications: 4.6.0.167
  • Software Platform: 4.0.0.217
  • File name: 9000M_PBr4.6.0_rel438_PL4.0.0.217_A4.6.0.167_AT_am p_T.exe
  • File size: 93.32MB
  • Software Name: BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.6.0.438 (Multilanguage)
  • Download Size: 93.317 MB
  • Published Date: 04/29/2009

This software version has since been taken down from AT&T's download page.
Download the OS file here:
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...E4F82F9F00E7D4

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the AppLoader says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

Previous OS version here:

No, an AT&T device user loading this file, does not need to delete the vendor.xml file. I just do it across the board, out of of habit.

Installed, but I am still on 4.6.0.167 and platform 4.0.0.157 after installation according to my BB... I downloaded the correct file from BB, package version 4.6.0.438. Not sure what happened...

I left both the latest (.266 from Vodafone UK) and this one, as it supposedly has a higher release number (.438), but I am betting that from the feedback from JvKintheUSA above, someone at ATT mis-named the file.

Anyone else find any oddities with this install?

Okay, I un-installed my Desktop Manager and device software from my computer. Re-downloaded and installed DM 4.6, then re-installed the AT&T package version 4.6.0.438. I now have 4.6.0.167 installed and platform 4.0.0.217. Not sure what has changed but I'll post it here if I find anything different.

, thanks for being the guinea pig... software platform .217 for this would be correct, which is an increase of the earlier released platform .206 which was associated with app version .167

The Software Platform for the original 4.6.0.167 is Platform 4.0.0.157.
The Platform for this version is .217. The platform for OS 4.6.0.247, is .206. So in release 438 the software platform is higher than OS .247 but lower than OS .266. I believe the .217 Platform is from OS .252.
Hope I didn't confuse you. This software version has since been taken down from AT&T's download page.

No noticeable changes...everything works like it did before. The hourglass has been changed, but that's all I noticed so far. Good reception, battery life and memory.

Anyone know why this was removed from the AT&T download site? Seems to be working just fine since I installed it.

I don't know. I still suspect the release numbers were screwed up in the naming.
