As per my note above, item #1 was "using the corporate browser."

You can configure the browser to go direct rather than over corporate network:

Options > Advanced > Browser

In addition to "Internet Browser" and "BlackBerry Browser," I've previously witnessed "mMode" and other browsers on AT&T, and T-Mobile has its own funky browser (T-Zones?).

I set everything to Internet Browser unless I need to get something from my corporate intranet (rare).

For me Opera works great on my 8703e (w/ keyboard), but I find it very difficult to click/hover/tap/whatever on the Storm. I find that the "tap" = "click" rather than "zoom" or "show button bar."

Hmm, I don't think the test you performed with Opera was going directly between your phone and the test server - I think it was going between Opera's servers in Norway and the test server. As I understand it, all data being served to Opera Mini is being 'preprocessed' on Opera servers first. I have run into a couple of websites that auto-detect where you're connecting from, and as a result, have served me Norwegian-language pages! Similarly, if I use Google to find a weather forecast, it gives me the results in centigrade instead of Fahrenheit, whereas the BB browser would give me Fahrenheit.
