I've decided to try this "theme-making" hobby. I am currently constructing for a 7290. I have already upgraded to OS 4.1

I got everything to run correctly and actually made one theme which is loaded and running smoothly however subsequent themes give me an error message when I try to export.

It keeps telling me that my home page wallpaper could not be sent with the rest of the theme as it exceeds 60KB.

Any wallpaper/images I use have been formatted to 240 W x 160 H for the 7290.

What could be causing these error messages? This is getting frustrating.

When I installed Plazmic, it asked for a copy of Blackberry JDE. WHen I installed that I skipped the option to install JDK as I didn't want to be bothered creating an account with SUN. Does anyone understand this jibberish besides me?

The image that you are trying to use for your home page image is larger than the 60KB limit, as it says. You need to save it as a png file of less than 60 KB. This question has been asked and a detailed explanation of how to avoid it posted many times.

My images were far less than 60KB.

I resaved all my 240 x 160 images from .jpg to .png using MS Paint.

My .jpg files went from 16KB to 95KB without changing the size of the files, still 240 x 160.

Now I'm really confused.

What am I doing wrong? I created the first theme using 240 x 160 .jpg files been have been 0 for 6 since.

If you have access to Photoshop what I do is save it for Web Access and it strips the file from all metadata and makes them smaller.

Yes that is correct, .jpg files use a different compression algorithm than png files and will always be larger for the same settings. That is why you need to save them yourself and play with the settings such as color and other variables. If you have to use MSPaint, try reducing the number of colors, it will degrade the image slightly but usually reduces the size without too much loss of quality. As Kontiki stated Photoshop Save for Web function allows you to control the file size for .png files.

I guess I need an education on publishing.

I don't have Photoshop, so I'm behind the 8 ball.

I reselected my original jpg photo of 800 x 600 which is 44KB.

Using MS Photo Editor, I resized it to 240 x 160 and saved as .png The file size was 96KB. The same 240 x 160 saved as a jpg is 16KB.

I'm well under the 60KB limit but apparently the photo files need to be .png?

I will have to see if I can borrow a copy of Photo SHop.

I do have Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 which includes Photo Suite 7. I've never used it, I just have not had a reason to manipulate photos in a manner that MS Paint or MS Photo Editor can't handle.

There's a free program you can download called IrfanView. irfanview.com

It's great for converting pictures from one format to another. When you go to save, check the "Show options dialog" box and that will give you access to the save options for any file format you want to save as.

I downloaded said program, thanks for the tip.

I converted a 240 x 160 (11.5KB) .jpg file and saved as 240 x 160 .png file and chose compression level of 9.

Now that file is 54.4 KB, which is too large to use for creating a theme.

NUTS! If everyone tells me to use .png how am I going to make a theme when this format INFLATES the file size???

Another question popped into my head.

when exporting is the home page recognized as a single file or does plazmic include the size and quantity of the cursors as part of the home page, and check to see if everything does not exceed 60KB?

I am well under the 60KB with my 240 x 160 jpg images and just don't understand why this fails at export.

Try saving the image as a .gif and insert it into the theme. Let the PTB software convert it back to .png while saving the theme. See if you still get the too large error.


If you can snatch some graphic software it really helps even if the software is an older version it's ok.

This was my guess. If you are using 2 seperate files, one for home page & one for the header they may add up to more than 60kb.

You can try dropping the color of the picture. You may not need 16mil colors when 256k or a little less will work and drop the file size dramatcally.

While we're on the Plazmic subject, I was wondering where can I obtain the transparent icons I've seen used for the 8700? Like in the 'Overlord' theme? I got the hand of my theme builder but I'm n ot crazy about the BB Dimension, transparent ones are nice! Any help would be sweet!
