This doesn't answer your question, but on a related note, Nextel coverage was fantastic on the three islands I was on (Kauai, Lanai and Maui). It seemed every hotel and bus company was using Nextel.
The other thing was that I saw maybe 4 cell towers the whole time. They have a knack for hiding them there.
I was in Hawaii last year for a business conference and we had many different phone services being used.... Verizon, Cingular, Nextel,Tmobile and others I'd almost bet you will be fine.
I had Nextel the whole five years I lived there and hand NO problems...no that they have merged with sprint...I would assume if there were any problems it would be better....

I'm in Honolulu, and am now with TMO, though I previously had Sprint and Nextel. Where I had coverage with Sprint and Nextel, the voice quality was much better than with TMO. But Sprint had a number of dead spots, including my downtown office -- just my particular office, not the overall suite. Nextel worked great in my office, but basically provided no coverage when I moved to a new home. TMO is sort of a compromise -- not stellar at either home or office, but at least available at both locations.
Overall, though, I think you'll be OK with CDMA coverage in Hawaii.
Thanks everyone. That's good news. CDMA coverage is great here in Canada but I've had little experience travelling to tiny islands in the middle of the Pacific
