Does anyone have any thoughts about what might an installation of SP5 for BES 4.0 to fail with this message:

"Database data upgrade failed. BlackBerry Enterprise Server will now terminate."

This error occurs immediately after I click setup.exe to begin the Service Pack Installation. I am not even presented with the screen where I tell the installer whether I'm using remote SQL or Desktop MSDE. The only document about this error on the RIM site is not relevant for me, because I had not yet hit that portion of the installation. No DB_Install log is created.

This installation ran beautifully on a Test BES. Has anyone else run into this error, and how did you get around it?

Information about my BES:
Currently 4.03 for Lotus Domino with Hot Fix #4
Domino Version is 6.5.4
OS is Windows 2000 SP4
SQL 2000 is Remote,

Currently supporting over 1,060 users.

I have the same issue, and so far I have been unable to apply SP5. I only have about 12 users right now, and all of the previous service packs applied fine. I am using SQL 2000 and BES for Exchange (2003 SP2).

does the BESadmin account have sufficient permissions on the SQL server, or are you using a named instance?

BEST to give the BES admin account SA permissions while you are going through the upgrade

We installed SP5 (Domino) with out any of the probs you mention, however we have a wired problem that when we try and upgrade our DB after a SP/HF we get the message:

"Database data upgrade failed; Error executing statement"

The installation carries on but in the SQL event log there is:

It seems to work but its just annoying.

We are installing sp5a tonight and then hotfix5.

Can't I just go right to hotfix 5 without installing all the other hotfixes first?

Found that the problem was with the SQL Permissions. Once the db_owner role was restored to the SQL ID, the installation completed successfully.

We just applied BES SP5a on Sunday and applied each HF (1-5) incrementally. I'm pretty sure I read here that applying the HFs one after the other was the way to go since each one takes your BES to a different build level. I had to reboot between each HF which was a pain but they all installed without issue. Note that I followed more advice from this forum that suggested stopping all the BES services before applying the SP. I did this and had no issues. I did not stop the services prior to HF installs electing to let the installer do it. No issues there either. The account I used to install the SP is the mack-daddy BESAdmin and SQL sa account.

I have some issues post SP/HF that I detail in a new post in this forum. Not show stoppers but I'll be drawing on the vast experience here; I'd be foolish not to.

Just put HF5 on.
