Default Pin Messaging

Is there a way for a non BB user (ie. someone on a desktop) to send a email to me using my PIN?

Unfortunately no, PIN Messaging is strictly from one Blackberry PIN to another.

Just a stupid question, why would you want to use PIN when you have email? what is the advantage?

Pretty much the same as compossing an email just your entering a PIN no. eg 20254AA9 as an address instead of an email address, then send. Its instant, device to device as well as secure, messages don't travel through a corporate server. You will need to know the receivers PIN.

Sometimes I have idle chat with people that I didn't want to have my e-mail fill up (webmail). Also, I can get a PIN message is seconds, where my e-mail sometimes takes upto 20 minutes...

Thanks for the answer!

PIN to PIN messaging can also be used, for example, if your e-mail server (Exchange/Notes/Groupwise/whatever) is down and you need to communicate with others in your company. Works great for that.

I am new to Blackberry and tried Pin messaging for the first time today. I have Verizon as my carrier, my friend has Cingular. He recieved my message, but I never recieved his, does this have anything to do with the carriers? Incidentally we both recieve each others email with no problem, me on a 7250 and he has Cingulars 72xx! Thanks for any help!

You can do PIN messaging between carriers. Double check the PIN that was used. It should work fine.

Hmm, I was having problems with PIN messaging as well but thought it was due to being on different carriers. I guess that wasn't the problem. I'm trying to page my husband's older model 950 from my 7290 but unable to get it to work. Anyone know if this is due to it being an older model? Technically it's not a big deal as I can just use his email address but I understand the PIN messaging would give me a delivery notification whereas email doesn't. That and I'm just curious why it won't work.
Thanks,
Pixelbrat

I don't think the older models like the 950 support PIN messaging.

The old 850 and 950 series were considered Blackberries ONLY if they had the Blackberry operating system loaded on them. If not, they operated on their respective networks, but without Blackberry features.

Not every Rim product is necessarily a Blackberry. My old Rim 850 operated on the Motient network (formerly ARDIS), but had NOTHING to do with the Blackberry network.

Same for my old Rim 950, which operated on the Cingular Interactive Messaging Network (formerly BellSouth). Mobitex, remember?. Again, not necessarily a Blackberry in and of itself.

Those concerned with the BES Blackberry user PINing with non-BES users can read here http://www.blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?t=5851

I now I am splitting hairs here, but PIN messaging should not be considered secure. PINs are encrypted using a common encryption key known to all Blackberries. Unlike a BES or DTR that use a unique 3DES encryption for each Blackberry.

An FYI for folks who work in the Health Profession or have security clearances.
