Hello

Did someone here got this to work? I want to use the blackberry modem
pluged into my laptop in order to access the internet via GPRS. I got
this working in a Treo cell phone, but I can't get into the
blackberry.

I saw a bunch of postings around forums but didn't work for me.

I have a 8700c from Cingular Wireless.

I got it to work with my 8700g and Tmo then I installed 4.2 and it stopped! Uninstalled 4.2 went back to 4.1 and it works like a charm!

Are you talking about device manager or the phone software version itself?

works fine on tmo.....im also running 4.2 desktop and vista and teathering perfect....on cingular you must have the teathering plan.

used this board here yesterday to configure an 8700g and it works like a charm using t-mobile. even got a pearl going this morning. registered here to say thank for the help.

I was referring to the BB Device manager ...... as far as I know the 4.2 OS has not yet been released for the 8700 yet even as a public beta.......

Considering the added audio capabilities of the 4.2 OS I bet the phone Companies want to delay its release as long as possible to increase their "ringtone" revenues

I had similar problems with nothing working as people thought it should eventually I followed these steps and it all fired up





To get it to work on the usb port you need to follow these instructions



Install Desktop Manager, this will install the RIM Virtual Modems and a standard modem in the usual place. Just check the COM port on the standard modem corresponds to the Virtual Modem



( I removed the software and reinstalled to make sure)



Create a new DUN connection



Select the Standard Modem



Edit the Standard Modem Properties and under advanced enter the following init string



AT+cgdcont=1,"ip","internet" (This is for Vodafone, you will need the equivalent string for your network, there is a list elswhere on the forum)



The dial up number is *99# (standard GPRS across most networks)



Username is xxx8220;Fasterxxx8221; (vodafone specific)

Password is xxx8220;Password (vodafone specific)



Go to the network settings on the connection and turn off IP Header compression



Ensure that the Desktop Manager is running



Then open connection as normal

Does this cost extra per month on Verizon or does it work automatically? If so, does it work via Bluetooth or thethered or both?

As you can tell, I'm new to the BB. Just got the 8703e from Verizon yesterday. I've been a Palm OS user since 1999.

Be careful if you're not on a tethering data plan as they have been known to back-charge for tethering usage at the pay-per-use rate.

The T-Mobile BB unlimited plan gives you unlimited usage..... but they will charge you extra for SMS messages.... so use a chat client like google talk or trillian etc. T-Mobile also has a email to SMS service you can access online to set up email addresses (free with BB plan) to associate with a phone number. This allows my kids to send me an SMS as an email and I won't get charged for it
