Default Radar Weather

Please Login to Remove!

Hi there. Looking for a "one touch" radar weather app (for the curve), preferably a free one.. if there's anything like the mycast that would be great. Ideally would like to have an icon that would go directly, as opposed to having to go into the browser and go from there.. Seems my browser is slow to connect.
Thanks very much, in advance, for your experiences with this.
- Maggie

maggieo, I don't know of one such as that which does not use the browser. I have a link direct to weatherunderground radar site for my locale, which works well, and a bookmarked saved to that site. Likewise, I have a several other bookmarks to other locales where I travel often.

Thank you both.. I have heard good things about weatherunderground, but I didn't find out much from their site.. Do you go onto it from the bberry in order to use it? Is it just a link or an installed app?
Also, where would I find info on jfisher for putting icons on the screen.
So jsanders, you can do a link directly to the radar page?
It seems sometimes it's slow for our browser to open.. I suppose we have no choice but to be using bberry's servers, right? we can't use verizon's or anything? We had mycast on the prior phone and it came up really fast.. that was not a pda though.
Thanks for your help.. I really appreciate it.. I have spent a lot of time getting to know this bberry, etc. but weather is a big thing my husband (it's his) uses all the time since he rides at bike.
Thanks.. any more info much appreciated.

I was just reading about something called an accuweather push.. this puts an icon on your desktop, but I can't tell if it's something you can then just click and have updated weather, or if it's just something that gets updated once or twice a day. I want to be able to have current radar/doppler weather anytime..
Thank you all for your continued help.. Maggie

Try Weather Bug. Its what I have, and its great. I get 2 icons, obed that has the current temp on it, and the other that has a pic representing the current weather condition on it. When I scroll over it, I get the high & low temp for the day. When I click on either, I am taken to the web site that also has a radar.
It's been the best for me so far.

Thank you all.. I've been reading all the jfisher stuff! Yikes.. A little scary, but looks very cool. CAn you uninstall stuff?
Kamau,
I will try weather bug.. It sounds like it installed the 2 icons for you? Did you get it OTA?

akosnitzky, also thanks.. I'm trying to get something free, since just getting the Blackberry increased our phone bill a bit!

Thanks again.. keep the suggestions coming.. It's amazing how different all the weather programs are.. We had the mycast and the radar pic was really perfect.. We could buy that as well, but, again, we're trying to find something free..

maggiero, direct your bb browser to: Weather Underground (Mobile)

From there you can bookmark that main site. Then you can type in the zipcode for your area. That will take you to your local page. Bookmark that page. That's the forecast page. Then on that page, you can cursor down and click on the zoom into animated radar link. That will give you your local radar page. Bookmark that one as well. So you end up with three bookmarks that you can go to with a click. And like JSanders mentioned, you can also bookmark other cities that you visit a lot.

It's a free site and works very well in my opinion.

I would assume you can uninstall, but since I have not tried to do it, I can't give you a positive answer for that particular app.
But yes, I did get it OTA. And yes to the free as well and to the two home screen icons.
I like it also because it has a bunch of alerts you can set up for as well, from floods to hurricanes. Since I live on Lake Michigan, I get rip tide alerts. You can even get typhoon alerts. It's fully customizable though, even allowing for ring tones.

Here is the one I use. You have to use the browser but it comes up quick. Just put your zip code in and then bookmark it. Zoom Radar

Just to weigh in, I have been looking for a good weather app also but have not found one I like. I created a web shortcut to weatherunderground for myself that. I offer a service to create custom web shortcuts that are only $2 for single use purchases. You will get to select the URL, which means you can send me the specific URL for you zip code and the radar view that you want. It is a little less scary than the free, but very good app by jfisher. Check out my service at the following website.

Custom Blackberry Web Shortcuts

I do this as well. My shortcut actually points to a modified URL for the animated Weather Underground doppler. If you browse to the animated doppler image on your PC via Weather Underground (Mobile) you can grab the URL and tweak it a bit, setting the image size and radius.

Push items are just that -- info pushed to your device. You don't have control over how often push items are updated. IIRC you can choose 1 or 2 updates/day with the AccuWeather push. You're looking for a pull (on demand) solution.

I use pocketday for some weather stuff, and I use a Weather Underground radar link for DC (below).

Has anyone parsed the Weather Underground URLs? I've been trying to figure them out, and so far have a few variables.

I have this link in my browser bookmark, which throws up a 320x240, prior 30 minute or so looping radar for DC. Perfect for me so long as I don't travel.

http://radblast.wunderground.com/cgi...ms=15&severe=1

The maxlon, minlon, maxlat and minlat, and width and height variables are fairly self explanatory.
newmaps=1 shows the underlying map
brand=mobile places the timestamp on the images
num=6 gives six steps in the loop.
delay=30 sets the time per step
showstorms=15 gives a storm track for 15 storms
severe=1 shows severe weather watch or warning, though it doesn't seem to matter if it =0 or =1

This one gives a 240x240, 100 mile radius map.

http://radblast.wunderground.com/cgi...re=0&showids=0

centerlat and centerlon are apparent.
r=100 gives a 100 mile radius

Does anyone have more of these variables and what they really do?

regards,

-jk

Wow! Thank you all so much for all of your help.. I am learning more than I ever intended about the Blackberry.. including the fact that I have spent a bunch of hours with it and these forums for the past week or more.. I need to take a few days to catch up (a little) on life and then to try to get back to this. I will keep reading what you write though.. For now, we bookmarked the radar weather from accuweather (which my husband liked) and he just refreshes it.. it's still a few clicks though.. I might just make it his home page.. We're on Verizon and finding that it takes a long time to open his browser.. Not sure why.. my work mates have verizon and theirs seems to open right up.. I think it might be slower at our house.. would it also, probably, be slower in the car, since you're moving between towers? As a non-bes user, it hits the verizon cell towers right? Anyway, thanks again to everybody.. I promise I will be back!! I might still contact Sibion for a couple of "desktop" icons.. for $2 how can I go wrong..
