I noticed that the file sizes are a bit different
from carrier to carrier you have different file-dimensions.
for example: east-asia includes other languages like multilanguage.

The base OS is identical. The language cod files vary.

I have a small (possibly stupid) question: if I do a general backup of the handheld before updating the OS, can I use it to restore my phone or will it get to the previous OS?

A backup only backs up the data on the device, not the OS. Its separate from any OS that may be installed. You can restore it back to any BB device with any OS installed.

Not stupid at all.
Backup only backs up the data; it will not back up the OS.

The first phase of the update process is a backup; the last is a restore. Just data.
Good luck!

I read the .199beta thread and I didn't read about anything new with this other than the number. Did I miss something?

Yes, it works fine on TMo. I've been using it for quite some time.

I've been dying for a way to "quick send" a SMS message. Looks like the "two menu click" is what I've been wanting! Upgrading now.

o..this is frustrating! I've downloaded this OS, installed it...ran APP Loader...and nothing. There was not a vendor.xml file in the install...think I got a bad download?

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

There's always a vendor.xml. Look in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader

If you have file extensions hidden then it will just say "vendor"

.199 beta is the same as a carrier released .199.. they are both the same build, minus any carrier customizations/languages

Between this release and 168 and 174 (beta) this is the worst in battery life. At least that's how it is for me with the same usage conditions.

Do you have to install desktop manager to upgrade the OS? My dad is on BES and I want to upgrade him. Just wondering whether I have to install Desktop Manager on his computer first.
