I never have seen such complainers in all my life. My company switched to the BB 8830 and there is not 1 single complaint (including myself) on the keyboard.
I see the keyboard fine and so do my 25 other colleagues. For a test I showed my wife the keyboard and told he to give me an unbiased opinion. She also said there is no problem with it and see nothing wrong with the blue lighting. So to knock the BB team that this is a deal breaker and they will lose millions on returned and unsold phones is a bunch of BS. Go back to the 8703e and be happy but stop with the BS that a handful out of millions are complaining about!

try again with your wife .. have her send you an email of at least 10 word when inside the house and with the backlight on ... then talk to her -

millions of 8830 users? lets see what happens to your users --- lets just wait and see ... either they start getting headaches and loose their vision or they start returning these poorly designed units ....

i can guarantee you VZ/RIM will change the keybaord if they want this to be a success.....

besides: i truly dont see any advantage on the 8830 over 8703 .... besides MUSIC (even that seems not to work well). the world phone thing is crap as it costs 100-s of $$$ to use it overseas .... so no go for me.

btw - i am not complaining - i am returned my unit -

Chascent:

I honestly don’t think it’s complaining as much as it is individuals stating the short falls they are having with the device. I personally think the blue back light against the silver key pad SUXS, and that’s why I returned mine. I am on the go like others all day (That’s why we have these types of devices), in and out of an office, car, buildings, warehouses ect………and I personally have a very hard time viewing the key pad.

Obviously to any person, a key pad which is black in color with white inset letters, that are backlit with a white light would have to agree, it much easier to see compared to just about anything (i.e.: Blackberry 8703e), or vice versa a key pad which is white in color with black inset letters, such as a common computer key board.

Maybe you should give your device to your wife and let her use it as an everyday tool, and I would have to imagine she would find shortfalls in this device, being the backlighting / key pad color combination as one of them.

Once again, this is my personal opinion! I’m only 37 years old, and my eye sight is perfect, so I don’t think it’s my eyes………………

Default To each his own

When you back to the 8703e, and I am assuming you are a businessman and not a casual user, you tell me if not having the voice dialing option, built in spell checker, and ability to add memory is not a huge downgrade.

Again the back light is a personal preference, you have to also ask yourself what % of the times you are emailing in complete darkness??? Look at the pluses and minus and make up your own minds. The voice dialer alone for me traveling in a car is a deal breaker...........

Unlocked Verizon Blackberry 8300 (Curve) Quadband GSM World Phone On Sale Buy

Look at the design of the 8300 curve for Verizon ..that looks like a normal keyboard.
If any Verizon user buys this thinking its real, then you have just pissed away $700, because there is no CDMA 8300, yet.

Is there any way to change the key-pad to a black/white one similar to the one on the 8703 or similar to the one in Curve. If there is no solution I may return the 8830 - it just doesnt work for me. Try it at home or in the store ....

Other than that - love the device.
Maybe if the phone was that stupid silver color, this wouldn't be a problem. Are ATT customers complaining about the back light color with black keys?

Charlie,
Well, I wouldn’t say I’m a businessman, but I am in the law enforcement arena here in south florida. I find myself checking work related e-mails as well as my personal e-mails and also find myself doing a lot of text message, due to the fact that I’m at times unable to speak on the phone. Obviously the spell checker is nice as well is the voice dialing, but for “me” it’s not a real big enhancement. My e-mails and text messages are not lengthy messages that require perfect spelling, but I will give myself some credit, I think I can spell pretty decent without having to have them spell checked.

You state: “the backlight is a person preference”. It’s the ONLY preference on the 8830, the end-user has no other choice with that specific device. I’m glad you are enjoying your 8830, and I’m sure there are plenty other who are also enjoying their 8830’s. But for “me” the topic discussed in this thread, well states why I returned mine.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend!

Yes. It's a proven fact that people type quicker when they aren't distracted by the letters. Maybe it's because I'm a product of the 80s but I had my first computer at 3 and I was typing without looking by 4 and haven't looked back.

Here is my keyboard:

Das Keyboard - The Blank Keyboard for Demanding Users.

Once you use that, you'll never want to type on another keyboard again.

spell check
voice dialing ... thats all -

how about
- locked phone
- locked GPS
- very expensive international plans
- invisible keyboard

BTW: when i use the keypad in complete darkness it doesnt look bad at all .. it is during the day and inside the office that keys are invisible -

i'd rather get a cheap $20 phone in europe with a pre-paid card.

i am going to wait for an open, gps enabled, wifi capable bberry or switch to sprint where gps in unlocked, keypad will look normal and free tethering is available.

btw i paid $250 - $100 REBATE FOR THE 8830 ... so $150 and still returned. When lookin at the very well lit verizon store the keypad looks awesome ... its when you take it out that is SUX -

After a weekend with my new 8830, I've pretty much adjusted to the keypad lighting! I knew the layout from my use with the 8800, and that probably helps. The blue lighting was a little odd at first, but I really don't see it as a problem now! Granted, white would have been better, but not a deal breaker for me. You just have to give it some time and eventually you get used to it, works for me!

I got used to the keyboard within a few days of using the 8830. After a week it was second nature just like my old Treo 700w. My wife also has not had a problem with the 8830 keyboard. Seems like a fairly subjective issue to me.

RIM can't make everyone happy with every phone.

Just return it.

I am with you on this. Initially I had a heck of a time seeing the keyboard, then all of a sudden it was no longer a problem. Can't figure out what changed, but I don't have issues now. Go figure.
