Hello, I am a Programming Linux Geek.
I never have had a BlackBerry and I hope it is what I am looking for.
So thats why I joined this forum.
I did some looking around and by my findings the BlackBerry isnt hacked to linux yet. Also it runs on a ARM processor. Well, I need a Linux Device with Wifi and GSM Functions. And it also has to have a Keyboard. Its a long search.. And well I really like to make that end it right now. Why do I need Linux you might want to know, well its since of my Job.
I am a professional Cracker, I earn money by testing the Security of Companys. And with Developing Security Software, eg Firewalls, Virus Scanners and Encrypted Password Containers. Security Research and everything. Now I do everything with a Laptop, and well thats really a pain. I know cracking a 512bit Encryption with a arm processor is Fiction but well if I can run Wireshark on my Device that would be heaven.
So, now I wonder.
Is there a Firmware Hack to put Linux on? Or can I install GCC and Compile all the Programs myself so I can run my Wireshark and Session Hijackers on my PDA? I did find the Nokia n810 really interesting since it has Linux and all the Functions I need, but its not a Phone.. I also need to be able to Call with it.
Is there a Firmware hack? Or can I connect a BlackBerry Serial to the PC?
Is there Firmware that I can download and Reverse engenier and then find a way to boot a Kernel or anything?
Are there any groups about BlackBerry hacking? Or well is there anyone who can help me with Documents? All help will be really usefull.
And for example does anyone know what kind of Chips that are in there? Blox GPS? or Broadcom Wifi?
Well anyhelp will be great.

As far as i know there are no "hacks" to replace the OS on the device with Linux. Why do you "need" a linux phone just out of curiousity? it is your job to test security, why not try the security of the existing OS? Welcome to the forums

Well I need Linux since I want to carry my Toolbox with me.
Since my work is really portable I really like to throw my Laptop away.

So any other OS would also be fine. Aslong as I can compile Wireshark for it and my own tools.

I either havent seen any modding like your refering to, I'm sure its doable tho, but why bother.. the phone is working fine as it is.. he he.
You have USB connection.. now you can start creating that usb to serial cable ;)

you might want to try the linux users forum within this site. AFAIK there isnt a way to replace the OS on the device with Linux. I could be wrong, but the linux users corner is your best bet.

I dont really need linux, but I need some of the finest applications out there to do my Research, Kismet, Wireshark well you know ;)
I downloaded a BlackBerry 8830 Emulator. I hope I can load my own Firmware in there.
If so, Ill download firmware and RE that and try to 'hack' that to load a Linux Kernel form my SD card or anything. but then again, it looks like a Wonderfull phone as it just is.

Well, thanks already you all.
I think I found out some stuff about the workings of a BB already.
Though I still would like it if somebody can tell me how he looks from the Inside.
The name of the Chips inside and everything. Broadcom or Linksys, NVRAM or PROM etc.
And Id like to know is there a free-to-use file explorer program for the BB? So I can get some of the CoreFiles and Study them?

A cracker in blackberry forums? is your work illegal or legal? if you are doing something to the blackberry os, then it must be illegal! Blackberry os is hackable but only through the java system and it is still very noticable when it happens. For the rest of you, sharing info with someone who admits to being a Hacker/Cracker is wrong, There is no such thing as an ethical Cracker, An ethical Hacker maybe, they are known as White hat hackers. No White Hat Hacker would ever ask in these forums for this kind of information. they work on keeping security tight, not ways to hack into it even more.

I am sick and tired of idiots running around on these boards sharing info that they should keep silent. ways to break into the blackberry and other nonsense! Now many of us who run BIS are being forced to switch to BES because these Hackers/Crackers are turning our BIS blackberries into BES and owning them. then feeding them the Java based system they want us to see. It does not work for all you Hacker/Cracker's out there and right now, Blackberry Rim is about to get the Proof of what you have been doing and how!

This thread is a year old! Could you elaborate on the "turning BIS devices into BES and owning them" a little bit? I haven't heard of this and I'm curious to find out.
