I hate waiting. Per the subject, is there a way to force an immediate deployment job? (i.e. software configurations, application policies, etc).

This works for IT Policy. It would appear to be applicable to Application Distribution, as well.

Devices > Deployment jobs > Specify job schedule settings > Edit job schedule settings > Default delay (minutes) > 1

Of course, it may still be a four hour interval due to a hidden setting.

I can corroborate this, I have it set to 2 minutes in my test 5.0 environment and software configs are pushed based on that schedule. Bummer there is no equivalent to Deploy Software command in 5.0.

The third party dev that creates a BlackBerry Manager 4.1 lookalike for a 5.0 environment would be my personal hero.
