Default A good GPS receiver

Please Login to Remove!

Can someone reccomend a good GPS receiver that I can use with the 8100? Do they offer turn-by-turn directions? Give a new route if you miss a turn? Thanks for the help.

Are you talking about just a GPS receiver to use with the Maps program or a standalone GPS nav system that will work with the phone capabilities of the 8100? It seems like you confusing the functions of the GPS receiver itself which ONLY determines your position based on the GPS fix. It then sends the data to whatever map or routing program you have to actually use this data.

FYI, Holux makes some great receivers that are BT enabled. I have several of them.

Hey guys... Maybe you can help me...

I recently picked up a Holux Bluetooth GPS from ebay "GR-230"... I can add the device through Options-Bluetooth... But every time I try to pair it my blackberry (7130e) screen freeze on the screen <<<Connecting to the desktop>>>.

How do I fix that?

I looking for a reciver to use with the maps program. So I guess the question now is does the maps program that comes with the 8100 give turn by turn voice directions, etc?

If the blackberry maps dont provide these features, is there software that I can that will?

I bought the Holux 240 - works great. Can't beat the size and it even looks just like the Pearl - chrome back and sides with a gloss black face.

Telenav works pretty good... 9.95 a month though... turn by turn with voice...

I am also using their GPS unit with the 8100's native map program, works great...

Their GPS unit is very small, starts fast and has auto turn off when not used...

I have a Fortuna GPSSmart (bluetooth) that I successfully pair with the 8100. However, when I'm in Blackberry maps on the 8100 and Click "Start the GPS", the screen doesn't change. (It also does NOT report any error with the GPS!). The BB maps program doesn't follow me as I drive, and it always shows 0 N for the motion. Is this an incompatibility with the Fortuna? The blue light does occasionall flash while in BB maps. I'd hate to have to buy another BT GPS to work with the 8100 BB maps. Do we have a list of known BT GPS devices that work / don't work with 8100 BB maps?

I know the Fortuna itself works, since I can bring up Mapquest on my Palm TX and it correctly shows the location and motion from the Fortuna.

Thanks,

Bob

Default GPS turn by turn nav...

I've been thinking about buying the Pearl because the ads say that the unit has the "turn by turn" nav feature. I thought that the phone had everything it needed internally for this feature... from what I'm reading on this blog, that's not the case. Who can help with this?

Default Pearl With TeleNav Response and Question

I recently purchased a Pearl (which I almost love) and TeleNav (which I almost love except for the Pearl issue). Telenav works great with the Pearl as long as you can see the sky. I live in the woods and the Telenav receiver has a problem with heavy woods and I'd suppose tall buildings. My standalone Garmin has some issues but not as bad. Occasionally it takes a while for the Telenav receiver to find the satellites but once it does it seems to keep on ticking. When not in use the receiver shuts itself down saving battery life. Cost was about $100 for receiver and about $10 per month or $200 for two years.

The biggest issue I've found is the common Pearl problem, lack of volume both on ringtones and the speaker phone. Open windows or Open air in a convertible and it is almost impossible to hear the instructions. Screen is very clear but it is a distraction to have to keep an eye on the monitor when trying to find your way through busy traffic.

I've been trying to research a hands free solution that would increase the volume either by use of a car kit, bluetooth or otherwise. I haven't had time to contact telenav to see if they had recommendations. Has anyone overcome this issue and arrived at a decent solution? I don't want a wired solution since the idea of gps on my phone was to enable me to carry the gps with me to whatever car I might be driving on a particular day- I've got a few, plus the smaller footprint of the Pearl.
