I don't think Google Maps moves with you, it's not a part of the program. As far as I know, Google Maps uses the GPS to provide location based services, not to provide moving maps. Let me know if I'm wrong. If I'm not, it probably won't be too long before they add the moving maps feature - after all, Google rocks!

Google maps does move with you...I tried this on my commute to work.

I see a small arrow in the shape of a triangle in the direction I'm moving.

yes it does move with you but it can be buggy at times and stop updating. I sometimes have to restart the app to get it to start following again.

IMO the best ones for tracking where you are is either Yahoo Go! or BBMaps, my personal choice is yahoo go because I have not had any problems with it not tracking and it has more options than BBMaps.

Concur that GMM can hang and stop updating position. Another poster had problem right from the start but found later that it would follow him. I assume in his case it was GMM hanging and only his luck that it did it immedialtely.

By the way, BBmaps also has stopped updating position, for some. (Wish Yahoo! Go worked with a puck.)

With GMM I see blinking blue (maybe green) dot when not moving. When moving, there is a little triangle on the ball, pointing in direction of movement.

s__dime, I haven't had good experience with GMM on the interstates. I don't know if it is the high travel speed or the transitions between cells, or what. The position update will hang or a whole section of the map will not refresh as it scrolls. BBMaps is better on the interstates, for me, but as I wrote above it can hang too. You should look at Yahoo! Go, if you haven't. Good reports here on the board about it and gps.

Default Yahoo seems to just work better

Yahoo Maps works better, in my opinion.

Google is very slow and unpredictable.

Telenav often makes crazy decisions about how to get you from point A to point B. In testing it around my house since I got it I have become so used to hearing the beeping noise then comes up when I force it to create a new route because I have just ignored them.

If only Yahoo had voice I would dump telenave. But when your driving by yourself you need the voice.

I want to use Yahoo go! but it tells me that it does not support the 8830.

there is a yahoo employee on one of these threads and she has been helpful about giving updates and stuff about Yahoo Go, just look for the original Yahoo GO thread in here.

i added yahoo! go to my 8800 yesterday and i like its gps update better than google local (or maybe google maps). i'm not interested in all the other yahoo! widgets. query: has anyone figured out a way to launch local/maps immediately upon clicking new Y! icon on handheld? (would prefer to avoid navigating to maps every time...) thx

followup, i'm now finding that if i exit yahoo! go using the upper right / red (telephone hangup) button on handheld, then the next time i click Y! icon i go directly into map view. so, issue apparently resolved.

You are not. Actually closing Yahoo! Go when you do this, just showing your home screen. Thus when you open menu and select Yahoo! Go, you are in fact just switching from home screen to Yahoo! Go, not launching it. To see this, I think if you press the hangup key like you are doing and then press alt-escape to bring up the ribbon, you will see Yahoo! Go. But if you shut down Yahoo! Go, it will not appear in the ribbon.

Keep in mind that by leaving the Yahoo! Go application running in the background, it may drain your battery quickly, especially if it is constantly updating the GPS and downloading content.
