PIN vs Messenger - differences & security

I would like to find out what the substantive differences are between Pin messaging and Blackberry messenger, besides the obvious. Are they simply two different formats to send peer-to-peer messages? Are there any differences in how they are transmitted, stored, or how easy they are to breach the message and intercept it?
In practical terms, just how easy is it for these messages to be intercepted? Do you require after market software or hardware to do this (i,e., the average person walking the street could do this or not?) I am NOT on a BES network - simply using my own company's email address. I also own the company so I'm not concerned about my company spying on me. But in the case of friends that own businesses transmitting sensitive info (i.e., lawyers) will their businesses email server automatically store this in some deep, dark file somewhere or would it have to be set up on purpose in order for this to happen?
I would TRULY appreciate some clear cut answers to these questions. Thanks!!!!
