Red face BPS Install Troubles (Exch 2007 SP2 & BPS 4.1.4)

Please Login to Remove!

Hi everyone, this is my first post here and really my first experience with blackberry servers. We have been primarily a windows mobile shop with a few iphones and other devices. We have always strayed from blackberries because of the cost of a BES, but we are fed up with the WinMobile phones and are looking into running the BPS on our exchange server. It seems like a great option. However, i'm running into two issues when at the Preinstallation Checklist. We are running Windows 2003 SP2 64 bit with Exchange 2007 SP2. I am trying to install BPS 4.1.4.

The first one says "Mismatched Microsoft Data Access Component (MDAC) versions are recorded in the registry" I ran the component checker from MS and it returned a mismatch on MSXML3.dll. The current version is 8.100.1048.0 and the expected version is 8.80.11850.0. I'm thinking this is not that big of deal since the current version is higher than the expected.

The second issue is saying "The setup application could not verify the Microsoft Exchange Permissions for the Microsoft Windows account. Before you continue, verify that the permissions are correct."

I have followed the "Getting Started Guide" for BPS to a T. I'm not sure what i've missed to get that. I have:
  1. Created the "besadmin" account
  2. Added the account to the local admin group
  3. Ran the two commands in the Exch Management shell (ViewOnlyAdmin and ExtendedRights)
  4. Gave besadmin "send as" permission at the root of the domain

These 4 steps seem to be the only items that would throw this error, but i've done them all. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

BPS doesn't install on a 64-bit operating system. 32-bit only.

Ok, thats odd since it says it can install on a server running exchange 2007 and 2007 is only 64 bit.

So, to take that out of the equation, i started the install on a another server. 2003 SP2 32 bit, and it is giving me the same warnings at the preinstallation checklist.

Have you created a mailbox for the besadmin account ?
Even, if there is no apparent need (besides of invitation requests, which maybe are sent from the besadmin adress, i think, without a maibox it will not possible for the besadmin to logon to exchange.

I have created the mailbox. I have tested sending to it and sending from it. Its seems to be behaving normally.

Dont know, if this is really a good tip:
Even, if it is not recommended, install microsoft outlook version 2003 to check if your connection to the exchange server is working.
If it does not, fix the problem, whatever it is, and afterwards remove outlook, an clean all remaing outlook files and mapi profiles from the registry.
Then again try to install the bes software.

----
One thing I do not know fur sure:
It might be possible, that BPS expects that exchange has to run in compatibility mode for outlook 2003. If you did not enable this, maybe try that first.

I finally called RIM and got everything squared away. I verified that BPS does run on a 64 Bit OS and it is currently running.

As for the two warnings, RIM support basically ignored them. The MDAC warning wasn't an issue.

For the exchange permissions, we just checked the two permissions in the management shell to manually verify that they were indeed there. After that the install went as it should. There were some slight hiccups in the SQL part, but nothing related to this thread.

The one concern for the tech on the phone was that Exch 2007 SP2 is not officially supported, only SP1. This may be the reason it was throwing that warning. However, all seems to be working on this new Tour.
