Tempted to switch to 8700
Please Login to Remove!
Hello everyone,
I've had the 7130g for a few months now. I'm very tempted to switch to the 8700 because of the *stupid* suretype.. its very frustrating. And now everytime I type 'be' it picks up br instead, and replaces it with '('. Anyways- its very annoying.
Has anyone gone down the path of going from a 7100 unit to a 8700 unit? Comments? Regrets, etc?
Cheers

I previously had a 7290 but the form factor of the 7130g tempted me in. However - if the 8700 is better than I may have a go. I'm going to see if I can borrow a 8700 for a week before I buy it, to make sure its what I want.
Curious - how is it better?
Cheers!

I switched to a 8700 from the 7100 and will never go back to suretype. This is why I haven't gone with the Pearl either, will wait for the 8800. If you're thinking of switching but can hold of for another 3-6 months I would suggest doing so and picking up a 8800 when they come out.

Ah I'll see if I can hold on. I'll try and get hold of a 8700 to play with. The 8800 looks really sweet, I've been following it up as much as I can. The form factor & the *proper* keyboard is recipe for perfection. Only thing I'm not sure of is the absence of the scroll wheel :-/

Agreed, that's why my 8700 will not be leaving my desk drawer. Just in case... 8700 is solid. To me the only thing it really lacks is a memory card slot and maybe wifi, but eh I'll live without those.

I went from an 8700 to pearl (too small screen and keyboard) to a 7130 - and love it. The 8700 is too wide , and I have big hands.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 3.02; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320) BlackBerry7130e/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/126)
I don't understand all the fuss about suretype. I have no problems typing whole sentences in both English and French. I rarely need to correct the word choices. Indeed this entire post was composed without ever using the delete key. I love the form-factor of the 7130e. Sorry to bust the suretype-bashing party, but I just don't get it.
Added: I have to admit that it took me about 2 weeks of solid use to get proficient, though.

Until 2 weeks ago I had not tried or owned a BlackBerry. Then after talking to a friend who uses one I decided to try one for myself.
I did not like the size and shape of the 8700, so I purchased the 7130c as my first BlackBerry.
At first I was incredibly frustrated with SureType, however everything else about the 7130c was very attractive to me. I changed my mindset and was determined to be patient and learn SureType.
That changed everything. In just a few short days of practicing I became very good with SureType and quite fast. Now I really love it! One of the nicest features of this phone is that I can use it one handed. And I can enter text much faster that I used to when sending text messages on a regular cell phone.
Finding out how much I loved the BlackBerry Interface, caused me to realize how much email I would now be handling on one. Because of all the "Pro Qwerty Comments" here on the forum I decided to keep the 7130c and buy an 8700c so that I could have a first hand experience to see which was best for me.
Now that I have used them both, I can say that I'm really impressed, as they are both very good devices. In my experience they each have their advantages and disadvantages. There is no one clear leader here.
It really does depend on personal preference. In my case I can enter text just as fast on either one. By a narrow margin I prefer the 7130c as I can easily use it one handed. Also now that I'm good at using SureType it's fast and fun.
In my case I cannot suggest one over the other as it's a fine line and really comes down to personal preference. They are both terrific BlackBerrys.

sure type is ok with me..
I really thought I would hate Sure Type.. It really only took me a day or two and man alive I fly now.. Just stick with it.. It really does work great.. I am sure the 8700 is great .. But it's just too big for my liking.

Simple answer for me is that the 8700 has shortcuts from the home screen and the Suretype ones do not. Major difference if you use them correctly.

For all of you who praise Suretype and claim you need to get used to it - I agreed at first. However, after using this device for a few months, the 'system' has gotten to the better side of me. I dropped the 7290 for the size, the speed and the look of the 7130g. Not sure if I could handle the 8700 - and worse, as a phone.
I'll probably wait until the 8800s.. they look freakin sweet :p
Cheers

I agree, the 8800 looks like one really sweet BlackBerry~
I'm also excited to see what the 8800's are like in person. In the photos and after reading the specs.... I'm ready for one of these...

I'm waiting for the 3G version of the 7130! Suretype makes up for all the typos that I made with the 8700. It does capitols, punctuation, and apostrophes -everything -automatically! . Don't knock it unless you really tried it. Posted with suretype from a Macaronni grill in FL!
BYW the keys are spaced better on the 7130 than the pearl the I sold last week on. Ebay !

My sentiments exactly! The more I use SureType the better I like it, a truly amazing bit of technology. I really love the size and shape of my 7130c.

That's another great point, and one that causes me to enjoy the 7130c so much. The amount of space between each key is perfect. Very easy to identify each individual key, therefore typing is a breeze.
Cheers...

I find that I use completely different vocabs in Emails than SMSs, so the learning feature is a double edged sword. That's fine that you guys used the Suretype but I've been on it for a few months - given it a good attempt but it just bugs me. I'll stick to it until the 8800.. than its out the window.
Cheers

Well now instead of comparing the 7130g to a QWERTY device on uneven grounds (I had the 7290 previously) I've managed to get myself a 8700g for a week to play with. So I'll use that for the week and see what happends!
Cheers!

Love my 8700c. With the Zen theme the shortcut keys to open apps is so handy/quick access. Just saw the BB 8800....looks awesome! If you can hold out I'd wait...looks like the best one yet.
