Unhappy Problems scrolling up on Bold

Please Login to Remove!

I searched the forum and could not find reference to the problem that I'm having.

My Bold is only about 6 months old and has nearly quit scrolling upward. The trackball moves freely, and I can scroll down and side to side with ease. But it refuses to scroll up. I have used compressed air on the trackball and even tried a damp alcohol swab in effort to clean trackball with disassembling the unit and voiding the warranty. Reboot didn't help either. Any other suggestions?

I would power the unit off. Press on the trackball and roll it up. This should dislodge any debris that could be preventing it from scrolling. Do that repeatedly until it rolls.

The trackball itself moves freely in all directions, but the display will not respond by scrolling up. The display moves down and side to side without any problem. When I move the trackball upward, the display does not move at all.

I would try ordering a replacement trackball.

The trackball gets oil from your fingers and/or your face on it. This happens to me about once every few weeks. I just lick the trackball, and roll it in circles on my shirt, multiple times, until it gets clean enough to track. DO NOT spray anything on it, like Windex, because it will drip inside the phone.

Nothing you can do about this; fingers and faces have oils.

Update: after googling a bit, I came across a tip. When the display does not want to respond to the trackball in a certain direction, use a clean dry toothbrush and gently scrub the trackball making sure the bristles get between the ball and its casing. I tried this about 4 days ago and haven't had the display issue since then. Now I get to confuse AT&T by sending back their refurb replacement.

I sometimes have this issue when the trackball gets something caught in it, i find quickly moving the ball up and down with a touch of force relieved me of this issue.

I think that you might reach a point where this won't work. The method worked on my Bold the first 2 times but today... I could not move the ball at all.

I found this other method (see the post about the piece of cardboard) by "dennisnky" and it did the trick after a couple of serious rolls.

Quick fix: Re: Clean Blackberry Track Ball - BlackBerry Pearl- BlackBerry 8100 Series Smartphone - - BlackBerry Support Community Forums

Well I guess now we have three methods:
-- press and move the ball or
-- use the toothbrush or
-- roll it on a piece of cardboard

Default Blackberry Bold

I had a similar problem with something stuck under the ball so that it would not move to the right. I tried the cardboard method (as described above) but did not want to scratch or wear the keys or display, unnecessarily.. i did try it a few times and the ball freed a little but there was still some serious resistance..

I removed the battery, moistened a cloth with 99% Isopropenol and cleaned the ball (rolling it lightly in all directions, then firmly - depressed in all directions). I ensured that the Iso had evaporated (after a minute or so), then used compressed air to blow any dirt or pocket lint out. put the battery back in, works perfectly now..
