Default 8310-OS4.5-How to merge multiple address books?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

my BB is connected to a BES account. Due to some OS issues it had to wiped a few times recently. When i restored the contacts from a full backup, it now has two address books, one that does and the other doesnt sync wirelessly.

Mails, Calendar, etc. sync all ok.

How do i merge these address books and ensure they/it syncs?

Thanks.

the most obvious option, though maybe not the most elegant one would be simply to clear the entire contact database on the device and then reload the contact database from the server. If the 2nd database/contact list is simply a backup of the one on BES, it sounds like they are basically duplicates, right?

both the address books (unknown and Desktop) have unique records/zero duplicates...one syncs while the other doesnt! Since the backup activity backs up all the contacts via Address book-All, all of my contacts are getting backed up...thankfully.

Googled and located following info...cant paste the URL as BBforums wont let me...

"Perform a full backup of data and applications on the BlackBerry smartphone before completing the steps below. A test smartphone is required to delete all data and applications from the original smartphone.

1.Restore the backup files to a cleared smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software 4.5 or above.
2.Open the BlackBerry Desktop Software and configure the synchronization to complete a ONE WAY import of the contacts to a .pst or .nsf file.
3.Clear the Address Book database using Advanced in the Backup and Restore tool.
4.Back up only the Address Book - All contact list to a new backup .ipd file.
5.Delete all data and applications from the smartphone using the Wipe Handheld option. For more information, see KB14058.
6.Restore the Address Book xxx8211; All contact list created in step 4 to the cleared smartphone. Note: The Address Book and the Address Book xxx8211; All should now contain the same number of entries. 1.Complete a ONE WAY import of the contacts to the .pst or .nsf file created in step 2. If prompted, click the Resync button to make sure only additions are made to the data file created in step 2.
2.Repeat steps 2 through 6 only if there are more than two Desktop or Unknown contact lists in the contact list options.
3.If enterprise activation is required at the end of the process, do not use BlackBerry Desktop Software to restore the contacts prior to or after the activation process, as the duplicate or unknown address book database will be re-created.
For more information regarding backup and restore, see KB10339 and KB12487."
I am stuck on the 2nd step...how do i export the contacts to a PST?

If you are on a BES, why did you have to restore the contacts? The BES will push the contacts back to you when you reactivate the device.

I would do this.

Connect your device to your PC and launch DM
Create a backup (I always do this)
Go into Backup/Restore > Advanced
Select the all Address Book databases
Click the clear button.

Disconnect the device from your PC
Go into your Address Book on the device
Press the Menu Key and select Options
Scroll down and highlight Desktop
Type RSET (you won't see anything being typed)
This will resync your address book with your mail server.

Restore is required since the BB had to be wiped...like i was saying the address book titled Desktop is syncing wirelessly, while the other titled Unknown isnt. I got to restore the Address book-all in order to get back all of the contacts.

This also means that the BES/Outlook contacts folder contains only a fraction of my total contacts...

Have you always only had 15 in Outlook?

as i was saying, my BB had to be wiped recently a few time because of OS issues...somehow the address book restore didnt happen correctly due to which i now have two address books 1) unknown => doesnt sync 2) Desktop => Syncs;

Unknown contains the original contacts that I had on the device as well as Outlook before the wipe and restore.

Desktop contains the new contacts that I added subsequently...now I am looking at a way to merge both these address books without causing any further issue. Also, i dont have duplicate contacts for the reasons mentioned above.

Trust this helps...

When you wipe a device, you don't have to do a manual restore. The BES keeps a wireless backup of your data. So when you reactivate, you will get all of your data back.

I think the fact that you did a manual restore of your ipd file is the root cause of this issue.

This is the information that you have posted before. But looks to be the only solution.

KB19704-How to merge Desktop or Unknown contact list databases on the BlackBerry smartphone using the BlackBerry Desktop Software

Step 2 would be to configure DM to sync with Outlook and do a one way sync from the device to Outlook.
