Default SMS Problem: CS or PS

Please Login to Remove!

I recently put a block on my text messages and then lifted the back just a few days ago since I am going to start txt messaging again. However now that the block has been lifted by Fido I still can't txt message, and in the Options under SMS i see CS or PS preferred, when once this said GSM or GPRS Preferred. Does anyone know what this is all about? What do these things mean?

Wirelessly posted (8120 4.5.037)

I would first try pulling your battery to reboot. I would also go to Options > Advanced > Host Routing Table, press the application button and choose register. Then wait a minute and see if you can send.

I have same options (CS or PS) on my 8310, SO 4.5

My wife is still under original 4.2 OS (same phone), and her setting options are GSM or GPRS.

Default CS vs PS

Because different carriers have different voice and data encodings, they've switched terminology to keep the docs consistent.

CS = Circuit Switched voice network (e.g. GSM, CDMA)

PS = Packet Switched data network (e.g. EDGE, UMTS, EVDO)

thank you!

i was wondering what these new terms meant.

has anyone tried using the packet switched networks for SMS? i imagine there wouldn't be any advantages to this?

My understanding is PS is currently not supported in the U.S.

my curve and GSM on it when I was using 4.2. When I upgraded to 4.5, it changed to CS/PS. My att store rep/blackberry expert said that doesn't matter. My phone was caput. So I am waiting to see how well I can txt when I get my new and improved (read not broken) 8310.

I tried both options (although I didn't do a soft or hard reset between each try) and sent a message to myself. The only thing I noticed was that with UCS2, it limited my text messages to a certain number of characters. With the 7bit, there was no limit. I'm not sure how the recipient receives the messages though (if it's just one or multiple).

Also, as far as CS or PS is concerned, I couldn't even send messages when it was set to PS. So I just kept mine at CS (not CS preferred).

Hope that helps. Haven't hit 6 page text messages yet but I'll let you know when I get there. ;)

Yup -- carriers closed that long ago when they noticed that people were SMS'ing for free.

I'd suggest asking your carrier as your settings need to match whatever it is that your carrier supports. I don't think there are a lot of us with Indosat.

More than 6 pages? You need to be using something other than SMS (short message service). Try MMS, PIN, email, etc.

Anything over 160 characters is NOT a short message and no longer fits the definition of an SMS. They were never designed for that. Email is the way to go for long messages, or in a pinch MMS with it's lack of limitations like SMS.
