I am unclear as to why some of the posts here seem to be aimed at excusing the conduct of RIM.
This thread started in November 2009. At that time, Office 2010 beta was released to anyone who wanted to try/demo it. That would include RIM. Since a major functionality and benefit people rely on with their Blackberry's is to sync with Outlook, one would expect they would have seized on this opportunity to update the software, as did many other companies.
They could have been excused for Desktop Manager not working with the beta version, but could have been expected to take the time (7 months?) available to ensure Desktop Manager would work upon general release of Outlook 2010. Microsoft (as I have posted earlier), publicly posted a tech bulletin on exactly what would be needed to update third party software to work with Outlook 2010 32 and 64.
I find several things of concern:
1) RIM did not update the software prior to general release of Outlook 2010.
2) RIM did not advise customers that DM would not work with the new version of Outlook (which would have allowed those customers to postpone an upgrade, if they wished, until it did, and avoided probably thousands of hours of RIM customer frustration trying to figure out what was wrong).
3) A third party company has already created a workaround product, but charges $50 for it. If they could anticipate and adapt, why not RIM? Could it be because their is no specific income stream for RIM from this, but only the general value of customer satisfaction?
4) Even now, they state that for the 64 bit version of Outlook it will be sometime in 2011.
This is not customer service as I understand it.
