I'm sure all of us would settle for any kind of working "bit" right now... because we don't have anything.

thing is win7 64bit is becoming the norm as people need more than 4gb of ram

M$ are starting to ship (certainly server side) software as 64bit only

i am very dissapointed that rim have not got any support for outlook 2010 and are not even giving a hint of when it will be supported for sync.

they do not even seem to suggest they are working on it.

come on RIM, lets have a bit of information and honesty, outlook 2010 has been out for a while now, i have been running both the beta and full product for some time

two simple questions

1:- are you going to fix this problem?

2:- and if so WHEN?

Default CompanionLink Works Fine

I thought the followers of this thread with like to know this.

I'm using the latest v4 beta of CampanionLink and have no problems at all synchronising Appointments, Contacts, Notes and ToDo with Outlook 32 bit on Win7 3 bit and a Bold 9700.

but the question is

why should we have to pay for a third party add on to get the functionality we need when RIM should provide it as they have in the past

RIM have not said they will not support outlook 2010 so why the delay?

It may be becoming the norm, but it is nowhere near the majority. So far, XP 32 bit is still the most widely used OS out there.

Server software is a completely different kettle of fish.

Office 2010 has been out since early June. that is not 'a while'.

RIM has stated that a 32 bit compatible version will be out in August. 64 bit in early 2011.

It's coming. I'm putting my money on earlier in August than later.

Default RIM Customer Service?

I am unclear as to why some of the posts here seem to be aimed at excusing the conduct of RIM.

This thread started in November 2009. At that time, Office 2010 beta was released to anyone who wanted to try/demo it. That would include RIM. Since a major functionality and benefit people rely on with their Blackberry's is to sync with Outlook, one would expect they would have seized on this opportunity to update the software, as did many other companies.

They could have been excused for Desktop Manager not working with the beta version, but could have been expected to take the time (7 months?) available to ensure Desktop Manager would work upon general release of Outlook 2010. Microsoft (as I have posted earlier), publicly posted a tech bulletin on exactly what would be needed to update third party software to work with Outlook 2010 32 and 64.

I find several things of concern:

1) RIM did not update the software prior to general release of Outlook 2010.

2) RIM did not advise customers that DM would not work with the new version of Outlook (which would have allowed those customers to postpone an upgrade, if they wished, until it did, and avoided probably thousands of hours of RIM customer frustration trying to figure out what was wrong).

3) A third party company has already created a workaround product, but charges $50 for it. If they could anticipate and adapt, why not RIM? Could it be because their is no specific income stream for RIM from this, but only the general value of customer satisfaction?

4) Even now, they state that for the 64 bit version of Outlook it will be sometime in 2011.

This is not customer service as I understand it.

I think people are confusing things here. It is not a Windows 64-bit problem. That works fine. It is both Office 2010 32-bit and 64-bit problems.

Office 2010 32-bit will supposedly be supported soon. It works fine if you first install Office 2003 or Office 2007, setup sync settings, then install Office 2010 32-bit. It works fine after that unless you try to update your sync profiles or settings. You can absolutely run the 32-bit Office on the 64-bit Windows just fine. This is how I am running.

Office 2010 64-bit is a totaly different animal. Probably less than 5% of users will use the 64-bit version, and probably less than 1% will need it or receive a benefit. Microsoft clearly says unless you regularly work with Excel datasets larger than 2GB, which is unbelievably huge, you don't need the 64-bit version. It provides no benefit. Microsoft clearly says all 32-bit plugins and add ons are not compatible. If you just installed it to have 64-bit or the newest thing, it is probably a net zero gain for you if not a negative one.

I am not disagreeing that RIM should have fixed this issue with the 32-bit Office months ago!! I have a hard time believing they will focus on the 64-bit version given the small user base, and little payback for them to do so. I could be surprised, but I would probably not do it if I was RIM!

Beware - I was also running/syncing fine with 2010 and then the DM threw out an error message. To get the BB to sync "anything" again (even2007) I had to wipe the handheld and restore back a backup made "before" I started syncing with 2010. In other words, something went wrong on the BB. It was quite an ordeal. So beware. It might be wise, if you can, to wait until RIM delivers the updated DM before you start syncing 2010.

Thanks for clarifying if the problem was 64 bit Office or 64 bit Windows... I had asked earlier but nobody responded.

Default Bold 9700 Sunc with Outlook 2010 beta - now released

I've been battling the same problem for several months - just simply gave up on trying to sync with Outlook 2010 beta (2) - Called RIM - and they simply said they don't support beta releases. So - workaround for me - was that I kept Outlook 2007 on a second device - and simply copied my 2010 file in place of the 2007 file - and "miracle" - it (of course) worked. NOW (as of today) I have the released version of Office 2010 and I can assure the RIM folks that if it doesn't work "out of the box" - it's GOODBYE Blackberry and HELLO Android!!!!!

I have never run the beta version of Outlook. Right now I can't get my BB to sync with Outlook 2010 - others have had success. We (those that can't get it done) have to wait for the new DM which is supposed to come in August.

If anybody gets any details on the new BB Desktop pls let us know.
Also I am ready to set up my new laptop but confused. It run Windows 7 64 bit so is it ok to use Office 2010 32 bit?
Other than the big excel file issue is there anything we will miss if we use 32 bit office on a 64 bit Windows 7? Any help would be grt.

Microsoft makes it clear that very few users need to have Office 64 bit and that they recommend use of Office 32 bit, for reasons similar to those encountered by some users in this thread. That is, while it may take a, hopefully short, while for RIM to update Desktop Manager to sync with Outlook 32, it will be much longer before it can sync with 64 (according to RIM). Other programs that worked with the old Office may be similar.

The thing about installing 64 bit Windows and Office is that it requires a complete reinstall, as opposed to an upgrade in place. This is a more laborious task as your added programs (e.g. Office, Quicken, whatever), must also be reinstalled and reconfigured. You will have to do this someday, as everything will move to 64 bit most likely, so you have to decide when.

You should be safe installing Windows 64 and Office 32 and be able to sync with DM at some time in the near future.

So do you mean if you install 64 bit Office on your 64 bit machine and Microsoft upgrades Office (to like 2012 or whatever in the future) you have to "uninstall"all of Office before an upgrade?

Just curious as I also am looking at purchasing a 64 bit machine and will need to know what to do in regard to installing Office (32 or 64.)

Thanks

No, it means upgrading from 32 to 64 means a re-install.

Other than Extremely huge spreadsheets, there is no advantage to 64-bit office.

And to those complaining abut RIM's slowness, Nokia just recently updated OVI to support Office 2010.

Thanks for your clarification...

I have been syncing my Nokia N900 with PC Suite all along... it syncs fine with Office 2010. I think PC suite is better than Ovi Suite.
