Default Slow wifi on 9650, Blazing on 9000

Please Login to Remove!

Hello All,

Just got a new Bold 9650 from Verizon... I can make the wifi connection to my home router (no security BUT I do have MAC address control turned on), and it is incredibly slow compared to my Bold 9000.

At first I thought it was not selecting the wifi connection, but I can see WIFI in white at the top of the BB browser and I was also able to turn off the mobile radio and the connection speef is still exactly the same as if I were using 3G.

This is not a subjective thing. It is much faster on the Bold!

Bold 9650 5.0.0.975

Any ideas?

Thanks,
R

What connectionr ate do you show under wi-fi diagnostics? Also, do you get the same performance at say, a hot spot, as you do with the home router? I'm wondering if it has to do with the data rate being negotiated between the router and the device.

Hey - thanks for the reply. That is a good question.

I did look in my last attempt and saw 48mb/sec if I remember correctly. I'll look at both devices and report back.

I have not tried this on any other hotspot yet, but everything else here in this location works great.

Just checked both devices - 48 Mbps, signal is about -45 dBm. This is the same on both the 9000 and 9650.

Great idea to check, though!

Any other thoughts? It is not possible for this to be throttled down by Verizon, is it? Anyone else out there with a Verizon 9650 with slow wifi?

Is there an objective speed site that I can use from my mobile browser? Maybe I will look around and see if speedtest.net works with smartphones.

Regards,
R

Well, I am not losing my mind...at mobilespeedtest.com I was getting about 1000 kbps with .73 sec latency - 100kb transferred in .84 seconds on the Bold 9000 with wifi.

The 9650 is about half of that - 500 kbps with 1.4 sec latency and about 1.66 seconds to transfer the 100 kb file. Interestingly this is about what I get on EVDO. I'll have to try this with GSM 3G when I have a good signal.

Regards,
R

Hello all,

Could someone with a 9650 and Verizon let me know what speed transfer rates they get on wifi - either with the mobile site above or some other objective measure that I could reproduce on my side?

Many thanks,
R

Are you running wireless security on your router? I seem to recall some folks talking about problems with the way different phones handle certain wireless security implementations. Can't remember which thread. A forum or google search may prove useful.

While you're waiting for others to test for you. You might take your phone to a different wifi(like starbucks or ...) and test again.

EDIT: Although not about wireless security, this thread talks about a user disabling wireless N on the router. http://www.blackberryforums.com/wifi...00n-2-0-a.html

No security - just MAC address control (only registered MACs can attach to the network). Maybe I will turn even this off to see if something is up, but I doubt it since I have full access from the 9650).

I went to my router, and believe it or not I can only choose g, n or b/g/n. I tried just g and the results are the same.

Thanks for the idea, though! I will keep plugging away. I am still interested to find out if this is *my* problem or something else with the 9650 / Verizon.

Just to complete the thread, Verizon has me convinced that the 9650 just isn't powerful enough to handle the higher transfer speeds. The processor is indeed inferior (compared to the Bold 9000)...

Maybe VZW just didn't want to try any harder, but I have given up as well. The phone is connected to the router and seems fine - it is just half the speed.

And this is the best BB VZW has.... <sigh>

Have you tried wifi with another router like I suggested before?

Yes Sir - I am in NY and get access to wifi using optimum online - negotiation was a solid 54mbps but transfer speed was the same as it was in my office.

Now all I am missing is objective evidence of speed from other 9650 owners on VZW.
